Clover

Clover - A lot more than any year since I've owned this house.

Okay I am one that thinks clover is a great looking plant/weed. But this year they seem to be popping up all over my yard. In the 5 summers I have owned this house I have not seen the clover this abundant in my yards. Do you have clover in your area? Is there a problem with it being very abundant like here at all? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I would much rather have the clover than the creeping charlie. First time in 7yrs. that our yard looked like one big flowerbed with all the clover flowering. Maybe it will choke out the creeping charlie that I can't control by any means. I'll keep the clover because the deer love it and it will encourage them to browse in my yard more often.

Creeping Charlie/Ground Ivy - A close-up of this invasive and hard to control weed.
-treks outside to take another pic for Grandpa Bob since he doesn't remember the last pic I posted for him.- Here is a better pic than the last one I had posted for you in another discussion. I braved the massive skeeter attack for this. This is a link in how to get rid of it. I'm gonna be buying me stock in Borex in hopes of killing this stuff off. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/yarddoctor/msg0612033826424.html

There is tons of clover in every yard on my block! Not the sweet pink kind, either, that we used to pick and suck out the nectar, it's the white kind. It's pretty but I'd prefer the pink. I kind of hate to mow it, too. What really killed me was having to mow over the beautiful violets. I let them grow as long as I could, hoping they'd throw out some seeds.

All I have ever seen in my life is the white type. I've wild mini violets all over as well and mow them down. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Violets actually grow from either an underground corm or rhizome, I believe. Of course, I am too tired to go look it up. I sometimes see a light pink clover, then there is a tall kind that is purple to red in color. I still am not able to imagine sucking anything out of it.

Either someone has gone about the midwest sprinkling clover seed around, or conditions are just right for clover this year. I have noticed it in abundance in our community, and I like it very much. I like the rich dark green, and the cute little flowers. I do not like the honey bees it attracts, however.

From that point of view, the bees are nice. I was not thinking clearly last night. I was remembering all the times I stepped on bees in the yard.

I love the fact it draws bees nearby. They help pollinate the flowers and buds etc around my yard. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I used to get a lot of clover in the flower bed but haven't seen any in awhile now. I am not sure what type of weather they like or even if they like certain type of weather. Maybe they don't like hot and dry? haha

I have lots of clover here too, and I don't mind. It's green, right? Also, the bunnies love it, and I'm hoping it will keep them from trying to get into my few garden plants!

LOL. I know what it is, Bob. What I mean was that most anything green would be fine with me.

Oh, man! I've seen that, yep... right in my front yard! That stuff just loves to take over! I used to love clover but not anymore! Clover takes over! Sounds like a political headline, huh? Well, it does! I'm always pulling up some clover whenever I'm gardening in that area. I've been able to keep it at bay, at least the larger clover variety. That little stuff, nope. I'm thinking I might have to resort to chemicals and I really don't want to do that. I have just tried planting Bermuda grass seed and Zoysia grass. If that doesn't squeeze out the clover, nothing will! Maybe it has to do with the amount of rainfall we've had this year. So much rain! I don't know. I guess it just got the perfect amounts of rain, sun and temperature to go nuts.

I just looked at your picture again and saw that it is the larger clover that I am always tugging at. I have this little stuff that looks like clover, so I just assume it is clover. This clover spreads really, really fast when it gets a lot of rain. I've noticed this over the years, and I think this year is proof of that! I pull on a clover flower which usually brings the runner up with it. I pull in the direction that the runner is growing from and usually find the main plant. When I do, it's outta there! Of course, we all know that clover roots itself all along the runners, so you have to get to them while they're still young, that is, if you want to reduce the amount of clover. I've seen it take over entire yards, killing all the grass. It is very pretty, that's true, but if you want grass, you have to get rid of the clover... or at least keep it under control which is very time-consuming!

I have lots of "weeds" in my back yard, but no clover. Wish I had some. Did you know you can make clover tea from the flowers?

You've got moss growing as well? If so that's a problem with the soil retaining way too much water etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM DADDY!!~

We bought our home ten years ago. We started with nothing but dirt when our home was put in. We had to sew our own grass seed before closing the loan at the bank. We bought grass seed and planted it and it looks like we have everything but grass. We have tons of clover and crab grass. We are going to buy some lawn plugs that will take care of that problem some time next year, we hope. I have noticed alot of new weeds this year too though.

When we bought this house the front yard was all brown and dirt. The opast owners did nothing to maintain the yards appearance. I spent a lot of money and time getting it nice and lush looking and gree, Now the clover wants to invade me. HAH! Good luck also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We have 2 kinds of clover around these parts. The nice, normal clover with the white or purpley pooffy flowers and another kind I call "sticker clover" with little yellow flowers that form big NASTY stickers. About 20 years ago I spent a couple of years pulling all the clovers I found in my yard out because I knew they were the latter kind. I also pulled the wild carrots because they don't produce nice anything and are the source of what we calle "begger's lice" a small, soft but very sticky sticker. I'm sure since that time I've gotten some back in, but just like the year I went out and pulled dandilions, and again, in 2000 when I sprayed herbacide to kill more dandy's, they have come back in. But never in the same way as before. Just like I hit the fire ants with Amdro and ran all the beds out of my yard. Mind you, my yard isn't great - in fact, the back is mostly just dirt now - but at least I don't have the same number of things that stick me or the dogs. I went after the stickers because at the time we had a big, dumb border collie mix. She was inbeded with stickers and begger's lice and her coat had to be cut off. I went after the fire ants because I'm allergic to them.
