To Fish or Not to Fish

One of the ways I enjoy life is by going fishing. I, however, have a strong moral objection to hunting for sport. I have no problem with hunting out of necessity. Since returning from a rotten little war over in Asia, I haven't been able to touch a firearm, let alone shoot one. I regularly fish the catch and release method, though, if one comes along I want to keep and eat, I have no problem with it. My 10 year old daughter is "hooked" on fishing and I love the hours we get to spend on the water, together. A friend, in a very nice manner, suggested that I am hypocritical in my actions, and that killing is killing. There is no difference between shooting a deer and eating it, and hooking a fish and eating it. This gives me pause...using straight logic, he seems right. How come I feel like there's more to it, and he's wrong. How do you feel about it?

Hey calcynic, funny that u posted this discussion on mylot.com. Guess you need help in challenging your young son's logic. Hmmm.. If i were in your position, I will say that if killing animals is a very cruel act then we should not eat animals, watch our steps so that we do not step on ants, let mosquito suck our blood as killing is always killing no matter what the reason is.

Is that the way of Buddhism? If we prepare ourselves ahead of time,we may not have to kill anything! There are substances that we can put on our skin to prevent insect bites, as well as wearing long sleeves and staying indoors at dusk and dawn! I think with the life cycles that keep our earth going, it is not a sin or a crime to kill a few animals or bugs, but if we wipe out entire species, then it is definitely wrong! There is such a thing as sustainable farming, and that includes fish raised on a farm! I do not know how they "catch" those fish, but I did fish at a hatchery when I was a child!

Believe me, I'm not Buddhist by any means. I squash bugs, spray ants and eat meat. You did a good job taking the concept to its absurd extreme...it helps, as I really don't plan to stop fishing.

I don't know about Buddhism, but practically, I will not want to be so cautious about my life. I will not spend so much time trying to find a 'substance' that I could put on my skin so that mosquito don't bite me. I will not crawl with a magnifying glass so that i do not step on a mosquito. How about bacteria and viruses? They are living organisms too. If you caught a flu, would you not go to the doctor for medicine that could 'kill' germs?

I think he is very wrong as killing deer is one thing and fishing and eating your catch is completely different. If you kill for food fine, and eating fish you caught is also fine. why would it be wrong.

http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_regional.aspx this list tells us that there are still good choices, and also tells us which fish to avoid, either due to being endangered or bad for our health!

Fishing is something my dad used to do with us when we were kids. He promised us it would be the most relaxing thing we ever did, as a sport. Imagine 4 boys, 1 girl and Mom and Dad going on a fishing boat to relax. Mom still laughs at her stories of how all of us kids would get our hook and line stuck in a tree while casting and Dad had to come to our rescue. Dad hardly ever got to"relax" while fishing. Nonetheless, I know he thoroughly enjoyed the experiences of fishing with his 5 children. I love to fish to this day...um...more like feed the fish. I hardly ever catch anything and my bait usually gets stolen, probably because I am daydreaming and don'totice the tugs on my line. Just being around the water relaxes me. If I do catch anything I always throw it back. I have no clue how to clean a fish and really don't think I would want to clean one. After seeing Bambi, as a child and an adult, I could never kill a deer, even for food. I would be worrying if I was killing "Bambi's" mom or dad! Plus, it seems more evil to stalk the prey and then shoot it. But, maybe the fish feel the same way! PEACE

I can hook the worm and clean the fish! But I would rather leave the cleaning to someone else!

Hook and release is fishing for sport. Hook and eat is necessity. Deer hunting is only the latter. Can't exactly shoot the deer and expect it to live.

See...my problem is with the term "necessity". It's not like the fish was the only thing there was to feed my family. Does eating the fish or deer automatically make it a necessity. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike hunters or anything like that; I'm in the process of judging myself...no one else.

Then you would have to give up eating meat and seafood. In essence it all has to be 'hunted' and killed. My point was more, it's not a sport if you do it to get food.

I personally don't see anything wrong with hunting or fishing. Now if you went out in the fields and just slaughtered the game and left it in the field, I think that is wrong. But we always eat the game that my boys bring home. Which is not very often because they had rather fish than hunt. And we all love to eat fish. But we also practice the catch and release as well. But if we are wanting a mess of fish to eat, then we keep them. Probably the reason you feel that shooting a deer is more wrong than catching a fish is the violence involved in hunting. And since you have witnessed war, I can see where it would bother you to hunt. I know there's no way that I could hunt. But I love to fish. So happy to read that you are spending time fishing with your little daughter. I know you two must enjoy that special time together.

In my opinion,i don't think there is something wrong with fishing or hunting for eating.I think what creates trouble is our mind,we wonder whether that's cruel or not, right or wrong is just out of pity. You know, once i had fed a duck just for fun,it has lovely light yellow feather and i love it very much. But one day i came back from school,i didn't see my duck and just found a dish of stewed duck on the table.Having seen that,i realized that what on the table was my duck and cried. But after all, after i calmed down,i ate it and immediately became immersed in its good taste.Maybe somebody will say that i'm conscienceless and very cruel, but what i want to say is that we all selfish,we can't live totally just want to make things around us happy. There are lots of people in the world are not vegetarians. If we do things just all put it in rules or just consider whether its right or wrong?how will others think of me?then we will do nothing!many things we do in our everyday lift is not as perfect as what we think or want,it's just because we don't put that on the table. If we just want to pick out evertything we do to find something wrong, then we must find that we have done nothing right. We had sinned a sin at the time our mother gave us the birth. But anyhow,i accept hunting for eating but don't agree with the act of just hunting for fun!!

Here is a sample of the information on that website I posted above: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_regional.aspx http://www.thefishlist.org/thelist.shtml http://www.endangeredfishalliance.org/fishinthenews.htm FISH YOU SHOULD NEVER SERVE: Chilean Sea Bass, Swordfish, Orange Roughy and Caviar! The following fish have been: overfished, oversold and overeaten. Now they are almost extinct.

It is natural to fish! Remember, in the bay, we cannot longer eat what we catch as it has been polluted for so many years now! The biggest problem that I see, is that the seas are being over-fished commercially, and between the pollution and extinction, we may not be able to enjoy fish either way! Maybe we will end up with totally new species, if anything can survive.

Yes, it is getting worse and worse! Right now, the bay area smells like someone lit a turd on fire and cannot put it out! I really enjoyed the shark that we ate, but it is also an endangered species!

Well I think it's horrible that we have so much pollution in the first place. I mean there should be no reason why I can't catch a fish and eat it wherever I fish. Why even fish somewhere you know is polluted anyways. Go somewhere else... Yes it's natural to fish of course, before we had the grocery store and restaurant and well, civilization, we had to fish. That doesn't mean that we should hunt for sport.

Fishing is fins, as long as you eat what you catch and provide food for the family. I am not an advocate of fishing for sport and causing pain to this creature if you do not intend to consume it.
