I went and visited a friend last night and they gave me half a dozen double yoke eggs, they get double yoke eggs from a friend of theirs that works in a egg farm, these eggs were rescued as it is policy for some reason to chuck double yoke eggs away, what a waste, there are starving people in this world and they are chucking huge amounts of eggs simply because they have a double yoke. I can't believe that people and companies can be so wasteful, is there a reason do you think they would do this...they all must as one hardly ever is lucky enough to find a double yoker when you buy eggs...I only have one thing to say with this practice...shame shame shame...

I have not heard of this before lilaclady and you are right in saying it is a waste. I just asked hubby (who usually knows everything) and he does not know. We get our eggs from around the houses who have them for sale, very nice eggs and you know there fresh, and on the very odd occassion we have had a double yoke! Will be interested to see the answer for this if there is one!

well cara, when you think of it, it must be some law here in this State or Country because lets face it if the supermarkets were allowed to sell them they would be dearer than normal eggs which mean the egg farmers would get a little more so if they are chucking them out then it would be because they have to...I done't hear of many people getting double yokers these days from the supermarket but this fella is giving heeps away to his friends and they have this light system all set up just to find the double yokers to chuck out, so i say there must be some silly law in there.

That is such a waste, there is nothing wrong with an egg with double yokes. I bought eggs before and some of them had double yokes. The price of eggs here are 1.75 a dozen ,so I am glad if I get an egg with a double yoke.

Yes it is a huge waste, why can't they give to a soup kitchen for the homeless or to the Hospitals or something, they are supposed to go to the tip....

Hello Lilaclady
I think that is just disgusting,Supermarkets are the worst culprits, they throw good away with their wrappers still on and not even of date, the other day while shopping in the ,no I won't name them I was pushing my trolley, when a tub of butter fell of the shelf. The boy who was working nearby, just kicked it under the shelf. I said 'If you just done that can I have it free. He looled at me and no and walked off. Its disgusting.

I think we would all be shocked and sickened if we could see the waste that goes on in all facets of the food industry. In a supermarket alone the amount of waste is disgraceful. Just because a thing becomes unsaleable due to a mark or squashed packaging or for whatever reason means it is thrown away. Even the staff can't buy things cheaply because they might be tempted to create the damage in the first place....staff cannot be trusted you know.
I'm glad you got to have the eggs. I haven't seen a double yolker for yonks. I wonder how they know??

I'm fairly stunned by this thoughtless waste of food! Around this area double yokes are highly desireable. When we buy the jumbo size eggs at the store at least 1/2 are double yoked. I'm not superstitious at all but my grandmother was and double yokes were always considered very lucky. Every time I get a double yoke I automatically say "It's gonna be good day!" I'll double (yoke) that ... shame shame shame ...

oh my goodness that's such a horrible waste. i'll be jumping with joy if these eggs are mine. i love to eat egg yokes. it'll be a special treat for me if all my eggs has double yokes. in fact, it'll be a special treat if one of my eggs has double yokes. that must be the reason why i rarely get a double yoker. ;[
it really makes me wonder why the double yokers are thrown away. i would have marketed them as a special type of eggs and make tons out of it. lol ;p

Throwing away eggs? What a silly thing for
them to do. I've always thought double yolk
eggs were a blessing. It's like getting
twice as much food for the same low price.
How do they know ahead of time that
the eggs have double yolks?

What a crazy policy. I had never even heard of a double yoke egg until I came across your discussion.....(where have I been*laugh*) What does it matter if it is a double yoke? In my opinion it seems like the egg farm could come up with a better system for getting rid of the "defective" eggs but obviously they prefer to just not deal with it. Too bad...so wasteful.

Hi there ,
I agree it is a shame and very wasteful . I am sorry I don't know why they do this and I hope some one will have an answer for you . Things like this make me made too . People sometimes can be way to wasteful. It is sad that all that wasted food in the world cant go to people who need it .

I love double yolks..I have noticed that when i buy the jumbo size eggs they usually have a few double yolkers...but haven't been able to afford the jumbos lately. But we did have one the other day and I called all my kids over to see it in the pan because you don't seem them much. Enjoy them!!!

I wonder how an egg can have two yolks... is it the cause of genetic disorder in the hen... or something to do with the chemicals present in the food feed to the hens... whatever it is... it is quite obvious that a double yold egg is not a natural thing... unless they say that it is safe to eat them... then i will stay away from this...

You are right lilaclady; shame, shame, shame. What a waste. We always felt lucky to get double yoke eggs. There is no difference in the taste and it's like having two eggs instead of one.
You'd think that they could at least donate them to some organization that feeds the hungry, wouldn't you?
I really just don't understand this deal of throwing away perfectally good food. Too many people going hungry in this world.
