Will people go back to traditional transportation?

With surging gasoline price, do you think people will go back to ride horses, donkeys, bicyles -- Well, it was like 100 years ago? How about outer space exploration? Will we be able to achieve it? Please remember that our rockets need abundant gasoline to go outer space. Please think about it.

I'd personally love to go back to horse and carriage days, but I doubt most people would agree with me. A lot of organizations are focusing on gasoline efficiency and alternative fuels. There are already several models of newer and lighter vehicles that run on various products. There's even a compressed air car that has been developed! Right now, public transportation within cities has grown tremendously. In addition, there is a very high demand on bicycles. The human race is apparently trying to make the best of a bad situation.

I don't think the horse and carriage will return as a main source of transport but I do think that other forms of transport will become more of a reality. Amongst the forms of transport that you mentioned is cycling, and another form that more people should hopefully use is good old fashioned - nature intend "walking." I think more people will start walking and more will also start cycling, particularly over shorter distances. This is something that should be celebrated because if more people use these forms of transport, it would mean that more people are finding some form of exercise, which which would be no bad thing. Not only do you reduce dependence on finding energy, you help people to increase their health benefits like reducing the risk of heart attacks. I am also heartened by the fact that American cities are seeing a growth in public transport. Public transport will help people become more mobile and people will be less dependent on cars. With public transport systems in place, inner city kids will have more mobility to get to places where they get a decent education. Of course all this does not mean that we should stop searching for different sources of energy. Mankind is actually quite innovative when it has to be and hopefully we'll find cleaner and more efficient sources of energy very soon. Let's bless higher oil prices for driving us to that stage.

But don't you think that public transportation also needs gasoline in order to run it? Well, we can also use electrical public transportation. But at least, we need to build such infrastructure first.

I think eventually... people will turn more and more to public transport... not only for costs but because it will come a time when it won't be practical to use a car anymore due to heavy traffic congestion and a lack of parking facilities. The thrill of owning a car and going for a joy ride will soon become something of the past. Something which will be sadly miss by future generations. As for our rockets... they don't use gasoline. lol The Space Shuttle has two solid rocket booster... and its external tank contains liquid hydrogen which is mixed with liquid oxygen.

I agree. Future generations may not have a joy ride with cars. Unless, there is a new invention automobile which has the same capability with a gasoline car. By the way, why can't we use liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as fuel for automobiles? It will be much faster to go from one place to another place

Well, I think scientists have to find alternative fuel which is the same capability with gasoline and of course, it should be comfortable with consumers. I heard about Ethanol. But I don't know if it will be a future fuel.

They don't use it for cars because the police have radars and speed limits. lol But joke apart... I think they have been looking at the possibility... but it is a highly volatile explosive mixture and extremely dangerous. For instance... on the Space Shuttle... they need to turn off the oxygen a few seconds before the hydrogen to prevent a disaster. There have been alternatives to gasoline for a long time. Half of the cars in Europe are running on diesel... which is cheaper. In Australia... 25 to 30 per cent of cars are running on gaz... which is about a third of the cost of gasoline. It is just that people are slow to adapt to alternatives when those alternatives are not attractive. Many people are not confortable having a gaz tank in the boot of their car. Other people don't like gaz because it cut the power of the engine by about 25 per cent. Buying a fast car and running it on gaz... somewhat defeat the purpose of buying a fast car.

Horses and donkeys will not be coming back as a major form of transportation. I once read a historical document that contained the remarks of the mayor of a fairly large city talking about the new invention, the automobile. As far as he was concerned, they could not make autos fast enough. Horses in a major city are a major problem. The cities at the time had clean up crews going full time cleaning up horse puckey. Additionally, horses have to be fed and watered. Horses and donkeys will not ever be a major form of transportation again because they are much more trouble than a car. Bicycles & small cars & public transportation (yes) Horses & donkeys (no)

If horses were used for transportation, the cost of horse manure removal in a large city of over 1,000,000 people would be far in excess of the cost of the fuel for a public transportation system and small private cars for those who can afford them. Imagine too, the stink!

But small cars need gasoline. Don't you think so? Well, we can use new invention, the automobile. But so far, the result is still premature.

I would like to go for a ride in a horse and carriage. I am bit overweight, or rather obese, so I would probably break the horse, or the bicycle. I suppose I would have to walk. However the gas prices are now going down, so we do not have to worry and remember when horses were popular most everyone except the rich had to walk. But it seems that no matter what, progress is made. So we might get the rockets into outer space, but maybe we will not be using gasoline.

I would love to..when I leave for work now it is dark and it takes me almost 45 minutes by car each way on a good day - I can't imagine doing this by bike everyday. I also live at the top of a hill, I can't imagine lugging groceries up it all the time...my van can hardly make it. I would use a donkey - but my ex moved out of state. The space shuttle does not use gasoline.

I think alot of people have already changed their method of transportation. I wouldn't mind doing that too but we do not have to travel far right now. I think it would be alot better for our environment accept for bad weather days. We would have to drive our vehicle on those days. We may have to drive if we are in a hurry also. I think they are wasting alot of money right now on space. They need to wait until we get back on track to continue with it.

Yes, I think so. We need to change our method of transportation.

I don't think so. In fact today the scientists research a new energy to replace the gas. Such as I've heard that the cars can be run by the corns. I love China

You are right with the increased basics Technology would be so expensive that slowly slowly everyone's gonna come back to where they started!!

i don't think people will go back to traditional transportation. In this highly competitive society, work and life rythme are really fast.the prerequisite for choosing traditional ones must be that we have enough time. but i agree riding horse, donkeys aer a good way when travelling or enjoy a new life style. in the future, with science developing, new energy resources will be explored,so i don't worry about the energy problems of rockets's going outer space
