I'm thinking of getting a website... Where do I start?

For those of you who have websites, and I know that many people on myLot do, which site do you use to host your website? Are they any good? Was it easy to set up your site or did you need someone who's clever at programming to help you? I know some programming but not html or any other web languages, which isn't very helpful(!) so I'll need something that's quite user-friendly! Even if you don't have a website, do you know of any good places I should look?

i use BlogSpot, it's pretty easy, you just put in the html codes for your images from an image storage site like Photobucket. then you type whatever text you want. you can check mine out on my profile page, note the headers, navigation bar, and the top banner on my profile page i made myself......but that's a whole other story.

Thanks for the recommendation of BlogSpot. There seem to be several popular blogging sites, and it seems hard to choose between them! I think I'll probably go for a blog to start with, and will check out BlogSpot to see what they're all about. :0)

I guess it depends if you want to pay for hosting or just want a freeby one, there are many programs you can get for web design but I couldn't understand any of them when i started mine and someone said for what I wanted a page for the easiest thing was already on my computer and that is "word" so I did mine through that...I have been told by some webpages are not done through word, well I did and it suits me fine...

Thanks lilaclady. The reason it's taken me so long to comment back on these replies is because I'm so confused about all the options available, lol! I'm not sure how to do a webpage through Word. Well, I know how to use Word, but not how to publish it to the internet! It sounds quite a useful thing to know how to do... In fact I know a bit of html and would like to learn more, but on the other hand I'd like to be able to do some clever things, which I might not be able to do myself. So, it's still all a bit of a minefield to me at the moment!! I'll keep exploring and see if I can get a clearer idea about it.

I have had websites since the middle of 2001. I have also had some bad hosting services, mostly due to a lack of good customer support. I didn't stay long with those hosts. I now host most of my accounts with HostGator. I have had zero problems with them. They even tried to help me move a few domains that were on another hosting account that really sucks. I use Fantastico Deluxe to setup my blogs in just a couple of minutes without any programming. Very easy setup. There are a lot of website building packages out there but when I need to create a website, not a blog, for one of my clients I use XSitePro Version 2. It can make a pro out of your pretty quick and it's designed to help newbies make sites and pages that are search engine optimized. I also use BANS or Build A Niche Store script to build sites that sell eBay items I don't even own. As an ebay affiliate I earn 50% of what eBay makes on each item that sells. I even have a script the combines my blogs and BANS together for a much more powerful force in the search engines. So HostGator is a great place to host your site. My account allows me to host as many sites as I want with just one month fee of $24.95. I like this because I am already past 20 sites. If you are going to stick with a blog you can use Fantastico which is in the control panel of your HostGator account.

You can get a hosting plan from some of the web-based hosting services with a small amount of monthly fees as a starter. Its convenience, easy to use, variety of ready-made templates and other web authoring tools being available. This can help you to overcome of the technical requirements on developing the website. And if you are using the website as an e-commerce site, some of the hosting plan include payment gateway solutions, shopping carts and electronic catalogs too.
