I have read a few studies about how sleeping more than 8 hours can actually reduce your lifespan. Most researchers attributed depression among others as one of the most common side effects of too much sleep! Now, that really sounds bad! Do you get enough or too much sleep?

That sounds good! I think your grandpa is really blessed to lead an active life even at the age of 89. Not many people these days stay active when they go past the age of 80. I think different people need different amount of sleep...

Yeah, the kind of place where you live also plays a role in determining if you are going to live long or not. Living is some really polluted city is not really my idea of prolonging my lifespan!

Well,I must definitely admit that this is the first time that I am hearing that excess of sleep will decrease your life span.I have seen a lot of discussions that tells about lack of sleep due to the busty schedule of the present world. It asked every one to have at least 6 hours of sleep and not to stress ourselves too much due to work or any other thing. I have heard that lack of sleep, would decrease our life span and said that everyone should have at least 6 hours of sleep a day. And what you said may be true but I am not so sure.May be ,its right.Excess of sleep will make you more lazy and you will start doing less amount of work, and your body would become obese and your health may be spoiled. And if your health is spoiled, ultimately your life span will decrease. Its just as a cyclic process. So,I think everything from sleep to eating to exercise, should be done with a limit.Excess of one thing or less of one thing would definitely decrease your life span and would definitely decrease. So,don't stress yourself in the night for work and also don't sleep too long. Cheers! Have a good day Happy mylotting and happy earnings.

Yep. Too much of anything is really bad. You can't even have too muhc sleep without suffering from side effects! LOL Anyway, the good news is that with the busy schedule that most of us have, there is really little risk that many of us will exceed the sleep limit!

alindahaw, if this is true then I am going to live forever. I rarely get more than five hours of sleep a day, and that's on a good day. Maybe there is hope that I did not know existed to help me reach a ripe old age; who would have guessed?

You are really funny! LOL Yeah, that thought actually crossed my mind when I read that article on a medical journal. i told myself, hey! I think you are going to live longer than the others because you have insomnia!

That sounds too unbelievable to me. Surely the only thing being reduced is how much life you actually spend awake so I guess in theory it is kinda true. We spend on average 1/3 of our lives asleep so we'd increase our lifespan if we slept 6 hours a night instead of 8 *joking* Where did you read that article? I have read plenty of studies on sleep deprivation but not on the effects of sleeping too much. How exactly does it supposedly reduce your lifespan?

I stumble upon it in yahoo a couple of days ago and in the journal of sleep brought home by my sister early last week. I looked it up in the internet a while ago and you can find a copy of it at a site called www.depression-guide.com/too-much-sleep.htm

That is good news! Lol. I don't really get to sleep more than 8 hours. 6-7 hours of sleep is really enough for me. As long as I don't do the nighttime shift then my sleep would be normal.

Yep, you said it! I can live on 7 to 8 hours sleep. If I go beyond that, I feel tired and groggy when I finally get out of bed. I think our body is not really designed to sleep a lot.

Yes,having seen what you post,i really believe in the parlance. For so many times,i feel tired when i have a long-time sleep,i just don't know why,Rest can be the killer?Maybe, everything has its own limit, not the more the better,or the less the better, take sleeping for example, sleeping 8 hours is rather ok.:)

Yeah, I know what you mean. If I sleep more than 8 hours, I get groggy and tired the whole day so I try not to oversleep even on weekends and holidays. I think too much of everything is really bad.
