Jealousy

My golden has been showing a lot of jealousy when my wife and I try to show any affection to each other. Any kind of contact sends him in to a fit of barking, jumping, and excitement. This has been going on for some time now and shows no sign of stopping. Does anyone out there have any similar experience with this? If so, have you found a solution? I would appreciate any help.

I have heard of animals doing this, but our dawg actually shows no signs of jealousy when my wife and I show affection. She does when other dawgs are involved however. I saw a tv show once that explained their actions are more about trying to get attention than actually being jealous, but I wonder about those kind of shows anyway. I bet you thought it was cute at first, but knowing how big Sonny is, I bet it isn't so cute anymore....LOL. I would like to see what resonses you get that may help you out.

Thanks for your response buldwgz. You're absolutely right. It's not too funny any more. Weighing over 100 lbs, you tend to pay attention to this dog when he displays his jealousy.

Yeah, I know you have to pay attention to him. Iam sure sometimes you want to say to him, "It's a good thing you look like you do." LOL. I know I say that to Miss Piggy at least once a day. You gotta love them!

My parents dog gets really jealous all the time. If you have a cat on your lap he will come over and nose the cat off of you and then put his head in your lap. It is funny how they can act just like little kids. We have to tell him no and push him away when he wont back off.

Thanks for your response meggan79. That is even more obvious than my example. We are not sure which one he is jealous of; my wife or me.

Try giving the dog some attention before you have contact with your wife then, when he starts acting up you have to take control of him because you (or your wife) are the Alpha dog in his pack. He needs to be sternly told "NO!" or "Stop!" and made to lay down someplace. Make him stay for a little while and then give him some attention, tell him he's a good boy and give him a treat. Go back to your wife and, if he repeats the behavior, you're going to have to repeat the response until he gets it. Eventually he will stop if you're consistant with training him to behave. Just be sure to give him attention first and to reward him for laying down and being good.

Thanks for your reponse spalladino. Believe me, this dog does not lack for affection in this household. But you are right, it's possible I'm not treating him with enough firmness when he acts up. I'll try that next time.

make sure that you give the dog plenty of affection even when your wife is in the room. make sure your wife shows affection too. yes animals get jealous. Cats are worse about it than dogs- trust me.

Thank you so much for your response, aydoctorsita. I can assure you this dog doesn't lack for attention and affection even when both of us are in the room. In fact, he is probably smothered with it from both of us when he is around.
