I want to know why the viruses are only there in system having Microsoft Windows. Why not in other operating systems like Linux and all. The virus thing just makes one really go over the roof as it takes up the memory, slows down the system and deletes some files. Why not viruses in formats other than *.exe

Because window is the most widely use and popular OS. If you're going to make a virus would like to affect only a small number of computer users or the world? Being widespread they are the most learned OS, do you know anything about linux, or mac that you operate it with ease? but for sure you know how windows work. Virus do not come only in EXE, they came also in VBS, JS, INI, BAT, JPG, DRV, SYS and all sort ext just to deceive users. Creator of this viruses take advantage and exploit the carelessness of computer users.

In my opinion, most hackers and people who makes virus/trojan/malware are angry with the way Microsoft is monopolizing the industry. All MS products are licensed and each additional feature you get have to be purchased or licensed as well. Linux on the other hand is open-source, typically all underlying source code can be freely modified, used, and redistributed by anyone. If you are using MS products, you can protect your system by patching it up. MS has been diligent in providing its users updates to fix the loopholes in the system that these viruses attacks. A good anti-virus will also help.

Since Windows is the most widely used operating system, it is a natural magnet for malicious hackers and programmers to target. Malicious Hackers prefer to infect the largest number of victims with their viruses, and look for the most widely used programs in order to create the most structural damage. It would probably similar if other operating systems held such a marketshare as Microsoft Windows. Compounding this problem is the fact that Microsoft often builds their programs in a slipshod manner, creating many vulnerabilities that otherwise would be preventable.

Windows is the most common OS that is using worldwide. Linux is an open source software, that is there many versions of linux available. So it is difficult to designa virus for linux.

if most of us around the world using linux then sure linux system to have virus, it is like the other people say windows been using worldwide so virus maker are aiming this system the most. there is a lot of virus out side there and not only in exe ext but in various format such been explain by other responder. antivirus and virus maker actually be friend, you know what happen if there is no virus, how do the antivirus can be sell if there is no virus attack, so antivirus maker challenge the virus maker to fight they antivirus, some time they pay the virus maker to spread the virus so they product of antivirus will be buy by people. most people using windows and virus maker attack windows system for money too. :)
