Some of you may have remembered that some months ago, I had contacted Creative Thought Magazine to see if they were interested in seeing a portfolio of my photo work. They were, so sent in about fifteen images via email attachment as a portfolio of several images. The editor then later informed me that she loved my photos and had selected a good number of them to be used for future issues. So all this time I've been waiting with baited breath for the first photo of mine to be published and today in my mail I got a copy of the August 2008 issue and my photo is smack dab on the cover...best yet credit is given on the inside cover. Also as a bonus, the editor "paid" me by giving me a free one year subscription to the magazine.
What makes this so great is that this is my first published photo on the cover of a magazine in some twelve years! I used to be very actively published from 1980 up to 1996 when uh, "things" got in the way and I had to stop my work.
so as you can imagine..I'm doing a Happy Feet Dance here...yahoooooo!!Since many of you here are writers, or photographers, or "creative" folks...can you share a story here of how you felt the very first time you were published...like maybe the first time you had an article published over at Associated Content, or had a photo published...ANYTHING?? Did you do a Happy Feet Dance?? Did it make you feel really, really great??
Here's a scan of my published photo...and the "regular" version of the photo, I've added on my photos section on my profile

Wow, that's really great, and I know very exciting. It makes me sooo happy when good things like this happen to people! The happy dance was popular in my house this month when I had my first articles published on eHow, and I'm currently waiting to see if my first article for Associated Press will be published!
I've always loved photography and yours is wonderful! Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!

Congratulations! It must feel good. I haven't had anything published, but, I would guess it's getting more and more difficult now since everybody and their brothers have digital cameras are calling themselves photographers. Way to go, I'm proud of you!

Thank you bonbon...LOL...I don't even have a digital camera. Still use my trusty Nikkormat EL-W 35mm film camera I got in 1977, and yup still works. I have to scan all my slides and photos to digitize them

WOW! WTG!! AWESOME! Woooooooohoooooooooo..Congrats on getting one and possibly more published in future issues of the magazine. I have indeed had not one but 2 photos published in the International Library of Photography. I'm thrilled that my photos were 2 of thousands that were picked. Had I had the money and guts to do it, I would of even been able to tell the story behind each photograph at the National Convention. I didn't get paid for either one which doesn't upset me at all. Just to have them published is an honor. This is the first one that I submitted that I simply called "Wintertime".

Very nice!
I think my first "published" work was a drawing I sent in to a local TV program and the host held it up to the camera. I seem to recall that it was of someone holding a pig under their arm... can't remember if the person was male or female. I think I may have been 10 or 11 at the time.

That must have felt great though to see your drawing on TV...was it some kind of contest you entered?

That is so exciting!!! You have every reason to do the Happy Feet Dance (or even the Happy Happy Joy Joy dance)! Is the subscription really the only payment you receive? Especially since it's a cover shot? Or will each subsequent photo receive a cash payment upon publication? Getting your name out there, having a published work, only makes things easier to promote from here on out!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You deserve it!!! (Great photo, by the way!!)

No unfortunately I won't get paid for the photo..I had worked with them years ago, and they never paid except in complimentary copies. I'm still hoping though that this could lead to other things and more work that will pay. Many literary magazines work that way too....they will publish short stories and the only payment is in copies.

Congratulations, pyewacket! I remember having my first short story published in a women's magazine ... it was really exciting, even though I look back now and cringe because the story was actually crap. I did feel really great when I went in and bought a copy (or a few) of the magazine!

What magazine was it??? Aww you shouldn't say you later thought it was crap....if they published it they didn't think so, but ah, alas...sometimes we're our worse critics...I look back at some of my short stories and kind of cringe too....LOL

That is so-o-o great! Congratulations. It is a gorgeous photograph, too. No wonder they picked it for the cover! I had an article published in a national boating magazine once. I got paid $250 for it. I think I bought about 6 copies of the mag. when it came out. I really felt like a big celebrity.
Congratulations again. Couldn't have happened to a nicer or more talented person!!

You still have copies of the magazine? I've kept all the extra copies of my former photos that were published...I keep them in this large plastic container....one day I was going through it to straighten and organize it and forgot just how many of my photos had been published in the past....so here's to a new beginning for me, right?

I am so happy for you, pyewacket! It's times like this, when you can actually see the fruits of your labor, that makes it all worthwhile. This should give you all the encouragement you need to really get back into the fray. I know you are a hard worker and deserving of every good thing that will come your way.
