How powerful really is Gandalf?

I noticed that Gandalf really did not do anything much in the movies, except when He had some kind of a power show off with Saruman. But based on what he did on The Return of the King, he was showing of some light from his staff then the Nazgul went away. Then when the orcs start to invade Minas Tirith, he was just commanding orders and slashing away with his staff and sword, he rarely uses his magic. Which draws me to the question of how powerful is he really. Got some answers? I've not read the books.

Balrog - evil monster from the Lord of the rings
I agree with egdct. but if you look closely there were actually many instances when Gandalf had to use his power. Who do you think went toe to toe with Balrog?maybe it would help if you read the book, because you can really follow along with the story. In movies you could get lost with the speed of the events and the special effects

yeah, come to think of it. And I know that the movie version of their fight was shortened, now I am inspired to read again the novels, I just hope I can understand them better this time around.

I did not write this but I agree with it, it comes down to the fact that we have to do things ourselves (the mortals of Arda or Middle-Earth specifically). The link I'm putting to a blog post isn't directly about Gandalf but it does talk about this subject a little bit. It's an interesting post, especially if you've seen Return of the King and the recently released The Hobbit. joerantsalot.tumblr.com/post/8881702906/why-didnt-the-eagles-just-fly-them-into-mordor Gandalf is more of a guide. He is here to help but not do everything for us. He is a Maia, or what I would describe simply as an angel of the LOTR universe, which means he is EXTREMELY powerful. As that blog said, he could have probably farted and killed all the orcs, but it's not his fight, he is here to set us on the right path so that we may become better for it.
