I was in a car accident last month and i have awful, unbearable back pain. I have never had back issuses intil then. My problem is i do NOT have health insurance, so i have been going to the ER when in pain. They perscribe vicodin which really takes the edge off but when i have none the pain feel 100 times worse. I know its an addicting medicine, but having a baby (1 yr old) i have to constantly lift and do things with her and that mkedicine helps me be able to. I also see a chiropractor but its not helping. What can i do to help the pain when i don't have meds? I dont want to look like a drug addict going back to the ER all the time but i dont know what else may help. Also i have tried tylonol, and large strengths of motrin/ibuprophen. Any adivice would be great. Thanks

Depends on where the pain is, and if it's just a muscle that was pulled or possibly something more that that. When the accident happened, did you go to the ER then? did they do xrays or anything? Also, was there another driver involved, and if so who's fault was it? If there was another driver involved and it was their fault, their insurance should be paying for it. If it is just a muscle, you might try thera-heat patches, they have them that wrap around and keep the heat where you need it for up to 8 hours. Seems like more and more ER's and doctors are prescribing vicodin like it was candy.

I understand pain and have been in chronic pain for a long time now. It is not fun at all and it really does stink. I am sorry that you are suffering so much right now. I just took notice that your post is very old so I hope that by now you are better then you were when you posted this. Take care.

Sometimes a short massage in the evenings may help along with icing for 10min every 4 hours if possible. I use to have that problem with my back until the chiropractor showed me some stretches and how to help with the muscles in using a tennis ball. Lean up against a wall and put a tennis ball were it hurts an apply a little pressure and move up and down so it is like the ball is massaging the muscle in your back. Hope that helps good luck

I feel your pain. I suffer from fibromyalgia which triggers alot of my neck and back pain. When I have flare ups usually ice helps takes some edge off. You can also try putting your feet up for a little while. It would probably be a better idea to get some MRIs done, to see if there is any serious damage. If you don't have any insurance don't forget you were in a car accident. Was it your fault or the other drivers? If its the other drivers fault their insurance will pay for any tests that need to be done. I hope everything goes well for you and good luck.
