Making a penny cost more then a penny. Do we really need a penny?

Since copper price have gone up making a penny costs 2.5 cents. Can we do without a penny. What do you think?

I would think that there would be enough pennies in circulation that we would not need to make more. I cannot see how they could quit using them altogether.
