Buyers Beware

Well htis morning on the news I heard about some companies charging customers the same price but cutting back on the amounts of products. One of them they spefically mentioned was Tropicana Orange Juice. Orignially it was 96 ounces and now the "new and improved" bottle design holds 89 ounces but customers are paying the same price. Well, as I was listening to this I thought no big deal I always look at the ounces and compare prices....well they got me, because the next example was Wrigley's Spearmint gum (which I am addicted to) and their new product design...the original package held 17 sticks of gum...the new package design holds only 15 sticks....for the same price.
So if you guys out there are on a budget make sure you look at the size of the product and go by unit price. Alot of stores list the cost per unit, like Krogers, and that helps a lot.
I guess this is their way of making the same amount of moeny and giving us less....which sounds like a ripoff to us. And the reporter pointed out that most shoppers do not pay attention to the downsizing of the product because they are either looking for the cheapest price or they are distracted by the new design of products.
So I hope this helps everyone.

Well, I think it is wrong to trick consumers. And like someone else pointed out on here it is nothing new...so when I find these things out I quit buying their product...plus the store brands and grocery stores are getting much better quality...at least Krogers I know is the best store brand...and you get more for a lesser price...I'd rather support the people who know how to keep loyal customers...instead of making a quick increase of sales.

I know as a smoker I found out that Basics are made by the same company as Marlboros....so why pay the extra 2-3 dollars....

They've been doing this for a long, long time. I haven't noticed it being any worse than it ever has - maybe the media is trying to make it sound worse right now for sensationalism?
I remember when they cut the size of candy bars, saying people would rather have a smaller size than pay a bigger price. Maybe they're right, but we should be able to make that choice ourselves.

Diaper companies have done this over the years too...in addition to raising the prices. I've been buying diapers for over 12 years so I don't remember the amount of diapers per size anymore but I know the "regular" packs used to hold a lot more diapers than they do now and they only cost $4.50- $5.00 (Luvs at Walmart). Now the "regular" pack is $10.99...for size 4 Huggies which is 34 diapers, I think it used to be 40 diapers. It's really horrible. I know costs increase over time but downsizing seems so sneaky...and paired with a price increase is even worse.

This has been going on for a long time..ever wonder why Walmart sells cake mixes etc cheaper? Because they are an ounce of so smaller then the regular size you buy at the grocery store. I think the practice is becoming more and more popular with different companies...it's there way of not having to charge you more for a product.

I have noticed that on some things I buy too. Like the dollar store cookies I buy my husband the package got smaller less cookies but the price reamains the same. It seems like a way to trick customers to me.

Well, I am always gonna be a little leery about product changes now....like same product new design....we'll see if it is the same.
I usually don't notice this is store brands...but maybe it happens with them as well...
