how does one start blogging?

there are so many sites out there for starting up a blog. there are also many more blog-sites that deal with just about every topic under the sun.
Which start up blog sites are the most recognized for the highest visibility?

I actually disagree with the blogger platform. Despite the fact that it's owned by blogger I like the wordpress platform better and it doesn't rank all that much worse. If you're SERIOUS about blogging I would get your own domain and then host a wordpress.org blog there ... this ensures that you're in control of your site and third party sites can't shut you down because they don't like your content.
If you're brand new and you just want to learn the ropes, blogger might be the easiest platform to navigate and work with, but I think wordpress has more options and features that will really allow you to excel in the long run.
