The Doorbell Rings

Part of my life has become not answering the door when I am home alone. Although we live in a safe and comfortable area, I won't open the door when my husband is not home during the day. Our kids have keys to the house and most often I am not expecting anyone to stop by. My friends work during the day so they won't be coming over to visit. Most often when the bell rings I wait to see who walks away. It's usually someone representing a church that wants us to join or someone doing home repairs. If you are home alone and the doorbell rings, do you open it when you're home alone?

I only let me husband answer it when he is home. i do not answer it when he is not there. i am just way to suspicious. I don't know why we live in a good neighborhood to. But bad things can happen anywhere.

I usually have my front door opened and I have a storm door with screen and glass so I can see out and see who is there. When it is hot and the sun and heat coming in I close the big door and I have a peep hole. When the door is closed and I am not expecting anyone I will try to see out but I am also afraid if I don't answer the door it might be someone checking to see if anyone is home or not so they can break in if no answer.

Crime is not high in our area but I still am cautious. If I see who is outside and had any thoughts it was someone trying to break in or just checking to see if I'm home, I will call the police. Thanks for responding.

Crime is not high in our area either but that didn't stop our neighbor's house from getting broken into one day while she was at work and he was out of town working. A neighbor across the street saw some girl go to the front door and rang the door bell and she thought nothing of it. Later she saw her and a guy coming out of the house with pillow cases full of things.

Good idea. I also look out a window to see who is there but most often it's someone selling something I don't need or taking a survey. Thanks for responding.

I am exactly the same way; I wait for the person to walk away so I can see if indeed it is someone I know. Except sometimes I think oh it could be so and so. I open the door and sure enough it is a Jehovah Witness and once in a while it is a door to door salesman. They remind me that I should never answer the door as it would be rare that a freind would stop by during the day as they all work. I had a young sales person stick his foot in my door one time to stop me from shutting it. I couldn't believe this little brat. I forget what he was selling but I decided not to buy so I guess he thought he would try and convince me.

I would be scared if a salesperson stuck their foot in the door. Would probably have a heart attack and die on the spot so then my house would be wide open for him/her to enter and take as they wish..lol Thanks for responding.

this seldom happens to me as we live in a gated apartment community so its usally a sales person who managed to slip in or a utility person which means my son forgot to pay a utility bill. so yes I do usually answer the door, and if its a jehovah witness or other church person I just tell them I have my own church so I say their time and energy.if its a salesperson I tell them I am not interested and close and lock the door.

Gated apartment community sounds great. What triggered this discussion was two women who came by this morning and rang the bell. They were jehovah witness ladies. I did not answer the door. They left a brochure between the doors so I knew who was here. Thanks for responding.

Hello carolbee, Fortunatley I don't have that fear, since I moved from london, I feel quite safe here, I know all my neighboursn and beside there is this nosey neighbour we have, if any one comes to out door, shes out there pretending to be sweeping her garden path, but hen again we all look out for each other, I have another who has a baby and she is at home when her husband is out at work. Our neighbours are very close so I lucky, compare to london, it was horriable there. Love Tamarafireheart.

Suspicious neighbours are good! They might deter somebody trying to break in to your place,too..or be able to ID a suspect..

I think in this world where people are perveted and bent on doing harm to fellow men, your policy is one worth emulating-in my country-crime is so rampant and the criminals come knocking at the doors-when you open, they mug you or even kill you to get what they want-keep that policy on for the safety of your family! I personally tell my kids not to open the door until they have asked who is knocking!

No..not the front door. My friends and family know that I only use the back door so that's where they show up. If someone is knocking on the front door I take a look outside....sometimes the postman has a package or something but other then that I don't open the door...especially if they are standing there with a clipboard...I know they are trying to sell something.

Hi carolbee, I can understand how you feel. The area we live in it's is suppose to be the bad side of town. This neighborhood has clean up a lot, and the gangs that used to be here are not here anymore. We get a punk or so, once in a while. Our house has fence and we let our dog out. One Sunday, these two ladies were knocking at our door. Mind you, noone ever comes all the way to the door, because of the dog. this one day Sparky decide to sleep in and didn't bother getting up, to get rid of them.LOL. But I also don't like answering the door. i kno when the man of gas company is coming to read the meter. I know when they are going to delivery the water. And when someone comes and starts talking to me in spanish, I tell them I don't understand and they walk away. but yes you have to be safe. So this is way I let Sparky go out early in the morning. He keep everyone outside the gate. And them people from the church, man, they will keep knocking forever. What's with that.

I do seriously believe the religious people feel they are doing what they believe and understand. I don't feel it's appropriate to go door-to-door to increase membership. Keep Sparky happy..lol Thanks for responding.

Just like you, we usually know who our visitors are who come visiting, and also the regular people who have the keys to the front door. So when our doorbell rings, we will usually have to be extra careful who we open the door to. Actually my home environment here is very safe because it is a condominium, but it usually pays to be that extra careful. The front door to our apartment unit is a solid oak door, so if some unknown person is at the door and rings the bell, we will usually switch the outside light on and look through the peephole to see if we recognize the person. We also have a latch with a chain, to let us open the door slightly to speak to the party without letting the person in. I guess these are safe-enough measures. Also if any workmen, repair or servicemen need to come a-calling, they will have to register with the guards first before they can even step into the estate, so that makes the place safer for us.

Wow, sounds like you are very safe. Can't ever be too safe when it comes to opening the door. I also keep lights in different parts of the house on all night. They are on timers and I love it especially if we are out for the evening. Thanks for responding.

Keeping some lights on is a good and safe practice. We have a friend who lives in a house at the end of a quiet street. When they go traveling and are out of the country, they will usually programme the timer to switch on some lights in their living room each night, just to give any would-be intruder the impression that someone may be home. I think it is a good idea to do so.

Normally, I would not open the door if I am alone. But if my mom is at home, I would go open. Somtimes, it's delivery. Like we ordered some stuff for my computer of cosmetics and we just have to sign it there and that's it. It's sad that there are still people who aren't safe to public and do such things. There's no way to live peacefully. When it's in the evening or night, I can be easily freaked out when I am alone. The only little noise i hear creeps me out. Maybe i just watch to much pshycho movies or I see things in the news. Anyway, we just get to be careful..

Yes but I think we have to take a risk sometimes. What will you do if you were single and live alone? In our house, we are 3 girls. No men. So we have to depend on ourselves. I think it's safer to open the door during broad daylight. But here in canada, it's more peaceful. Of course we try to not be overconfident and be careless. But the neighborhs are always walking their dogs and i see children playing soccer on the streets. A place differ to one another when it comes to security.

I typically don't answer the door, even if I'm not alone. Pretty much every time it's just someone trying to sell something, and I just never feel like dealing with them. I figure that if it's something important, they'll ring the doorbell a few more times or leave a note. And if it's one of my friends, they usually call my cell before they come over so I can expect them.

Exactly. I think most problems occur when a person from an outlying area comes to another area to rob or whatever. It's not usually the neighbors or someone who lives in the area, according to what I've read. Thanks for responding.

I am rarely at home alone but yes I do open the door if thhe dorrbell rings. In fact it is good that I do cause that is how I found out about the shooting in our neighborhood. The detective rang the bell and wanted to ask if I had heard anything. I also get packages all the time so I open for them also.

First I'll look to see who it is from my bathroom window. Then I'll go to the door and see what they want. Usually if it's someone I don't know, I'll have Domingo there with me to ward off any possible attacks. One look at my dog with hackles up, growling, and showing his pearly whites will stop anyone in their tracks.

Good idea. Always a good idea to bring the killer dog along..lol We have a burglar alarm but it's not on during the day when I'm home plus it's not 100% effective. If someone wants in all they have to do is but the phone line. Thanks for responding.

You know there was a time when I would answer the door. that was a few years back. Now I don't feel comfortable. If it's UPS or someone I recognize through the peephole, sure I'll answer. I usually walk quietly to the peephole or if I can look out the window I'll do that. I hate to be so covert in my own home, but I have this thing not wanting anyone at the door to know I'm in there. I think we're getting paranoid with so much stuff on the news around here anyway - people being robbed in their homes, home invasions. Better to be safe.
@carolbee (16230)

Exactly. I'd rather be safe than sorry. People that do home invasions are generally not from the area they are robbing, according to stats. Thanks for responding.

I don't have a peephole on my door so i have to look out the window, and if i don't recognize them i'll ask who it is. we also live in a nice area. so far no one unexpected has dropped by, but if i don't know who it is and they have no reason to be there then no i don't open the door. that's the thing criminals would most likely target nice areas.

I sometimes open the door when im home alone, but I have a spy hole in my door :) If its someone i dont recognise then i just dont bother. My house front door and back door are both always locked even when im at home. In my neighbourhood just anyone could walk in! Its scary. And its quite a troubling thought knowing that people on the other side of my front door could be anyone!

I also keep both doors locked all the time. I feel safer not answering the door when I am home alone unless I can see who is at the door. Most of the time it's a solicitor. Thanks for responding.
