My husband and I recently started a farm at home. We were both still working full time while running the farm in our spare time. The farm does not yet make enough money to support us. Have any of you taken the plunge to start your own business, and is it successful enough to support you? Let us know about your successful business!

having a farm, sounds really great, and i hope it will turn out well for you two. :) I'm dreaming/planning on starting my own flowershop. My that had a horticultural centre (garden centre) and i loved to help him with it. But i love flowers more. i just want a small business with wich i can support my family and which i will enjoy doing while i can still study some things. I love learning and i have to find a way to combine this with something that i love to do and brings enough food on the table to life comfortable. And the fact that i like to do my own thing, is also a reason to become my own boss :) . But at the moment i'm still studying psychology at the university... In my spare time i'm looking up things to educate myself on the things you need to know before starting a business on your own.

THat's interesting that you have a love of horticulture, yet you are studying psychology? I have a love of animals, but went to college for engineering. I don't regret my choice, but think that being a vet might have been a better choice for me. I also thinking running a flower shop would be fabulous! Being surrounded by beautiful flowers all day would be a nice change.

I used to have a very weak stomach and would get squeamish around blood and needles. When I was younger and someone told me that in vet school, I'd have to dissect a cat and a dog, that's what turned me off. I didn't think I could ever do surgery on an animal. I'm still not sure I'd ever be able to do it. That helped solidify going to engineering school - no blood, no needles... SO I had a good reason, I just wonder if I should have found out, instead of just giving up.

it's a bit strange my chose of psychology maybe :) at first sight. It's just that i'm interested in a lot of things and i couldn't bring myself to already focus on just one thing. I thought a lot about studying philosophy, but i didnt... oh well... there's so much to do and to know. and biology, and veterinary and medicine and... choosing engineering instead of veterinary is also a bit different :p . It's a pitty you regret it, but i guess you can life with it ;) you got your farm now :)

I tried to start my own cleaning business. It barely took off of the ground. I had a very hard time drumming up and keeping business with people. Money was always and issue with them and they would drop the service. I charged very little but people could not afford to pay it. I had to eventually stop doing it and work here at home on my computer. I wish you all the best with yours though.

I'm sorry your business didn't get off the ground. The hardest part is starting up, I am sure. It probably took as much time to look for clients as it did to clean their house.

I don't own my own business yet, but some day I would really like to own my own busiess. My husbad has in the ast, but doesn't right now, as has my mother. Hubby and I are thinking of two things; either a small cafe or a publishing company for new authors just starting out.

I think they both sound like marvelous jobs. A cafe could be so much fun - especially if you really got involved in the community.

We nearly starved our first year or two, but managed not to lose our house or our lives and now we are doing quite well. It's great to be able to spend some time on mylot when things are slow at the office without worrying that the boss will get after me! You have to work hard, stick with it, be patient with one another, work harder and stick with it!

congrats on starting your own business. It's pretty risky, which is why we are still working while getting the farm running. BUt I am seeing the value in us being able to devote ourselves full time to the farm. Heck, weeding the vegetables is a full time job in itself, and being able to be at home at all hours to see the delivery of new born lambs is pretty cool, too. Anyhow, congrats on getting through the rough early patch of starting a business, and sticking through to see it be successful!
