My great grandmother died, and I'm not going to the funeral....

Before anyone jumps on my case, let me explain why. I called my mama just a few minutes ago for something and she started talking about my little sister wanting to come home from Upward Bound, it some kind of educational "camp". Well, she said she told her if she came home, she would have to go to vacation bible school tonight and to our great grandmother's funeral tomorrow. I didn't even know it was tomorrow. I had been asking all week so I could get off work. I told her, "well, I won't make the funeral." She knew I had to know before the day before so I could clear it up with my boss. I just think that's kind of rude. I wouldn't even have found out if she hadn't started talking about my sister. She wasn't even telling me then when it was going to be. It just happened to come up. I just feel kind of bad because I wanted to be there, but maybe things happen for a reason...

Everything does happen for a reason, but surely your boss would understand. This is immediate family. I think you should try to make it you might regret it later.

You're probably right about everything happening for a reason. I usually read about relatives dying in the local newspaper because my family is so large my mother doesn't always know when someone passes away. I'm sorry that you wanted to go and can't.
