Could you live in a Walmart?

Once upon a time, I saw a movie, called
"Where the heart is." It was about a pregnant teen
(Natalie Portman) who was living in the local
Walmart after being abandoned by her boyfriend on
a road trip.
It has always made me wonder whether or not it
would be possible to live in a retail store
undetected, in real life. Not just in the movies.
Our local Walmarts are open all night, so there
are always employees on the floor
and security is very tight.
But maybe such a thing would be possible in a
hardware store that shuts down for night time.
What do you think?

Best movie ever!
The entire cast was superb.
I laughed. I cried.
I wish I could find that movie online.
It's one of the only movies I haven't been
able to locate. Would love to see it again.

i saw that movie too, and i loved it. but i think i could live in a walmart, but i dont think it would be possible becuse most of the walmarts here actually stay open for 24 hours so they have people there all the time. but it sure woul be nice, since walmart is my favorite place to visit. i could go to walmart just to look around and i will always end up spending about $20 or $40.

Could I do it? Heck, yeah! It'd be better than being here.
Is it realistic? Probably not. Even after the store closes (assuming it's not a 24 hour store, there are cleaners and stockers and that's usually an all night shift so technically the store is always open...just not for customers.
I wonder if a 24 hour store would be easier to live in. They wouldn't be doing security checks to make sure restrooms were empty and the shifts change often enough for new emploees to be around and not recognize you as often. Plus there's usually enough hustle and bustle around the clock that I bet it wouldn't be too hard to slip behind boxes on a high shelf or into a display tent to sleep.

That's true about the after-hours people.
They would be really hard to hide from.

I would love to live in a walmart. Although in reality I doubt anybody could live in a store with out being caught... I mean, It could be possiable but very unlikely. By the way, I love that movie. It's based on a true story too. So, I guess it could actually happen.

Actually, I have heard it was based
on a real life event too.
Not sure how close to reality the movie stays.
But it's an excellent movie.
Kudos to the cast and writer.
Movie was very well done.

I saw that movie and often would wonder that too if it is possible . Here I dont think so because ours is open all night too . I think far in the country it could be done for a bit with out anyone finding out . I would get lonely if i were alone , and bored after a week . I would enjoy the time at first I suppose , because walkmart has everything .

I would be bored out of my skull
with no lights and no internet.
It would be awfully suspicious
to have lights running after the
store closes.
Though some stores do keep low lights
on even after closing.
Guess that's how she made it work.

Wasn't there a Tom Hanks movie called, "The Terminal"
or something like that, where he ended up living
in the airport? Supposedly that was inspired by
a true story.

I saw a news story last week on a man that was living in a furniture store (for real). The company knew about it and was
using it as a promotional tool. He contacted the company before he did it and they thought it was a great idea.
I'm like you. I would want a Walmart that shuts down at night. Then I could stay there. We have a couple around here that still close about 10 pm.

Possibly. I mean as long as they had clothes and everything. The only problem would be a bath. of course there is usally a bathroom in most stores. So if nothing there is always a sink and soap. Washing their hair could be a problem though. Well maybe not just kind of difficult.

That's what the girl did in the movie.
Basically she took a bath in the sink.
Or maybe she used that thing that connects
to the faucet. I can't remember what it's called.

I read the book and saw the movie. For some reason I remember the book better than the movie. It was a good story.
I do believe a person could live in Wal-mart, if your talking about having all the basic necesities available.
But, at least here, where I live, most stores now have plenty of security cameras all around, so I don't think a person could go undetected.
Just an extre sidenote - Do you know that people bring their RV's and camp in Wal-mart parking lots?? I've heard its becoming more common and that people even use tents now. Not sure if the tent part is true, but I believe I saw the thing about the RV's on a news show.

Since I work for Wal Mart, I don't think I would want to live in one. It would be impossible because our store is also open 24/7. It would not be possible because after a while, you could be followed for suspicious behavior.
Maybe in a hardware store for one night, but that would be all. That's Hollywood for you-always stretching the imagination.

Yes, definitely. I try to keep myself away from Walmart as much as possible because I always spend way to much money.

I've heard of people who have lived in gyms, if that counts. I have a friend who lived out of the back of his car for six months, and worked fulltime at a gym. The gym was a slightly higher-end type, so not only could he get a shower there, but he could also get a bite to eat at the bar once in a while. Apparently it's a good way to save up on money, so long as you don't mind living out of your car/gym.

That sounds like a good movie. I remember on General Hospital years ago Luke and Laura were staying in a department store for awhile. I suppose it could be done in fact I wouldn't be surprised if there were some homeless people living in stores these days or even people who can't afford to heat their homes in the winter.

First of all I loved the book "Where The Heart Is" and I definitely thought the movie was a great interpretation of that book. As to whether or not I could live in a Walmart, I suppose if I had to, like the pregnant teen in the story, I could certainly do it. The one that I frequent in my neighborhood does not stay open all night so living there might not be so bad.

Hello dear beauty queen. I think that it is impossible for one to live in a walmart or any other shopping place like this. Movie itself is virtual, not real. But I am really so sorry for the pregnant teen girl who was abandoned by her boyfriend. It was a disaster to her and rude of her boyfriend...Take care.

I actually have never seen that movie before. But now I'm really interested so I am going to try and get it from the library so I can see it. I think that it may be possible to live in a Walmart or any other store like that. I mean sometimes the guards that are there at night sometimes are really tired and don't really check everywhere. So you could possibly live there if you don't make too much noise at night and try to avoid the guards or something. That'll be pretty cool though.

Yeah, I think I could live in Wal-mart. My wife keeps begging me to see the movie, but I won't ever because I am a jerk who does that kind of stuff sometimes. LOL. But really, I think I could live in a Walmart and get away with it. There are plenty of places you could go around the building where you would be undetected for days if not weeks. If you go a job there then imagine the amount you would save on gas. And Room and board. You would make out like a fat rat by investing well over 75% of your wages into High MM account. Or buy a house and rent it out because you have no real expenses except for food, live above the economy. Wal-Mart should offer discount housing to their employees, that would do wonders. That movie reminds me of The Terminal with Tom Hanks but different. LOL
