taking the breathes of babies? i had cats all the time i raised 5 kids. they often slept with my kids, even when they were babies. it isnt that i was being neclectful. its just that i had never heard this was wrong until my mom visited when my second child was 8 mths. she noticed the cat getting around the baby and as she dont like cats she told me the beleif. by that time tho i knew it was just a story. btw, all my kids are grown and fine. what old wives tales do you find unbelieveable

Old wives tales regarding cats are all hog wash. Cats won't kill infants. I have a friend whose daughter is alive today because the cat slept with her.
The infant had some unknown medical problems and stopped breathing periodically in her sleep. Whenever this happened, the cat would start licking her. Also the cat went to get the parents once when it couldn't wake the infant and the parents rushed the kid to the hospital. This is when they found out about her problem and the cats role in keeping her alive.

That is such utter nonsense and it's an erroneous old wives tale that isn't true. The mere fact that your mother told you that just reflects her dislike for cats in general I think. There are so many stupid old wives tales and superstitions in general about cats...like especially how black cats are unlucky...well I've had black cats all my life..in fact I've had cats all my life period

LOL--how opposite. My mother actually got our first cat when I was five and a half years old...it, was an early Christmas present..so she was Babette, whom my mother got from a shelter on Dec. 7, 1961....kind of odd too, since for the most part my mother had been a dog person all her life and grew up with dogs.

hey pyewacket, your so cool. yes, my mom would never let me have cats growing up. its just one of our many differences. the first thing i got when i left home was a cat! then another and another and on and on. people used to drop cats they didnt want off at my house. once we had 11 cats! no, dont worry, i fed them well and cared for them and didnt cage them up.

i think a few cats have like accidentally smothers some babies by like rolling over on them or maybe the kid pulls them on top of them while they are sleeping or SOMETHING lol.. i dont believe it but i cant think of any annoying ones i have heard but it seems as if most are unbelievable yet they live on and are being handed down.. so stupid!!

I think there were cases of cats sleeping near babies and accidentally suffocating them - but babies can suffocate on pillows and other things, too. I was brought up with a lot of superstitions - like never being allowed to put new shoes on the table, or opening umbrellas indoors - and I still avoid doing these things and don't let other members of the family do them, either! We were also told if you gave someone a knife as a gift you must also give them a coin - or the relationship would be damaged. And if you give a purse or wallet, that must also have a coin placed inside.

Yes, I was taught about the coin in the purse, too, so that your friend will always have some money! I think it's just supposed to be a penny, but a gift card is way more fun!
I have heard that you should never hang a mirror on an outside wall (like next to a window), because evil spirits will use the mirror as a portal into your house.

HA! I think some of them were made up by parents for some purpose. but thats pretty cool about the evil spirits. i'd never heard that before. I did hear about giving the knives tho. yes, there are still some i pay attention to like dont open an umbrella in the house. bad luck.

my cat acts like a dog. Where everr my daughter is the cat is. She has slept with her since I brought her home. I do not think this is true. The cat is her best friend.

It is indeed an old wives tale. But, cats do like babies and often get around their faces simply because babies smell of milk and formula. Cats love milk! I'm sure in the past some babies may have had their breath stolen when a cat got too close or layed on the child. I know when my son was a baby I kept his door shut while he slept so I wouldn't have to worry about the cat bothering him.

i suppose it could happen. it could be that my cats were always fed so well, they didnt really need to search for food.they always got a little milk from time to time. also, i was lucky to never have a child allergic to cats. it could be a factor.

I don't really think it's an old wives tale as such. A child can develop an allergy or not be able to breathe because it's swallowed or breathed in some cat hair. Don't forget, cats shed fur all the time so I wouldn't let it come too close to the baby if I were you.

I also raised two children with two cats who I adopted long before I became a parent. My husband had an aunt who had never married and never had children. She actually admonished me for not "getting rid" of my cats because she believed that the cats would try to such the milk out of the baby's mouth and therefore, suffocate the child. The fact is that most cats (and dogs) will snuggle up to babies because they have such warm bodies. My cats often jumped into my son's crib and stroller only after he had been in it because the spot where he slept was so warm. I have many photos of my cats snuggled up with my kids when they were babies and they bring back many fond memories now that my beloved pets are long gone.

The cat story is most definitely untrue! Cats tend to be more protective of small children than anything, even if a kid ends up with occasional scratches. I think it's sweet that your cats slept with the babies.
I don't believe any old wives' tales. I do believe snopes.com.

I usually don't believe in old wives' tales. My mom used to believe the one about giving a sharp object and a coin so as not to sever the friendship and the coin in the purse or wallet. I like those because I like getting extra coin. She also didn't open an umbrella in the house in case of bad luck nor did she put shoes on the bed. I'm sure there were others, but I don't remember them. Another reason not to believe in them.

My father use to always tell the tale and it just seemed crazy to me . I know all my cats are so loving and everyone I know that has had babies the cat never did anything , but seem to watch over the child more . I wonder how this one came about . I also heard of cats stealing the babies milk .
Here is a letter I came across while looking over some information .
While I was visiting the in-laws yesterday, Mom-in-Law informed me that cats will climb into a crib with a baby and suck the breath out of a baby there by killing him/her. She followed it up with "They don't to it out of malice but, while they are sniffing the babies face, presumably looking for the source of smell of milk/formula, they inadvertantly cause the baby to sufficate".
With that, I was nearly in stitches. It was all I could do to hold that one in. Later, I found out that it is an old wives tale and that no where in the United States had a case of such ever been recorded. Not so much a mystery but, still a pretty entertaining story if you ask me.

it is quite interesting the ideas verses scientific proof. i'd never had any proof for people that believe that tale except to show how they were with my own kids.
