Stolen Dogs

There seems to be a rash of missing/stolen dogs in a particular area of my city recently. I live in a small city in western Canada. These are dogs, not puppies. Some (if not most or all) have been spayed or neutered. It is a mixture of purebreeds and mixed breeds but mostly large dogs like labs, golden retrievers, huskys, rottweilers, etc. One of these dogs (a lab cross) belongs to someone I know. They had talked to the police and since nobody saw anything suspicious when the dog was taken, they can't really do anything. The local humane society mentioned that they were not the only ones to have this happen lately. This is what prompted me to look through local classified ads and see just how many and what types of dogs have been taken. Which is how I know the above information. I'm trying to understand why someone would steal these dogs and how I can go about trying to find them. Any suggestions?
