I was wondering how long it would take to stumble onto a discussion of this nature :)
Wow, you are right. There are a TON of scams that say "pay us $500 and we'll make you rich" and blah blah blah.
I know what you mean about the envelope stuffing scam as well, and had some friends fall victim to that before I could warn them away from it. A good tip here is usually if it sounds to good to be true, that is probably the case.
A lot of this stuff has to do with Network Marketing. This form of business is actually not bad at all, but their are different systems within this form that are not good. There are good and bad aspects to everything, whether it is church, politics, public education, homeschooling, marriage .. the list goes on and on.
Forbes magazine listed Network Marketing as the fastest growing industry in America. Again, there is good and bad.
You asked what works and what doesn't. Be careful to research opportunities. It is hard to sell physical products, change people's buying habits, and convince people to do something they don't already do anyway. Also, the compensation plan is VERY important. If it is based on a "Binary" system, STAY AWAY from it. You have to work forever to make much of anything, if you ever do at all.
I do want to share with you one of my business opportunities, and it is working. My team is the fastest growing in our company, which has done $250 million in revenue since 2000 and is 100% debt free.

We are a real opportunity. Don't quit your day job (yet) but rather use our business to help yourself out with a little bit extra at first.
We are currently expanding rapidly in several different countries. So check that out. Once you see the big picture, I think you will be amazed and excited. Contact me from there and lets talk to see if you would be someone I would enjoy having on my team. We have an amazing thing going here and I can attest personally that is does work well for people who want to be serious and build some for themselves.

I haven't been scammed. I did start selling for a direct sales company. I did ok with that working part time. I'm a stay at home mom. A friend and I started our own company www.thecraftcart.com. It's a direct sales company that sells all inclusive craft kits for children's parties. We have an extremely low start up because we don't want to take advantage of anybody looking to do direct sales. It's been fun and interesting and we're starting to grow!

I have been scamemd before, and it sucks. The only good website I've found it http://www.myfriendbenjamin.com/ and that's because they review the stuff before the post it. Helps to weed out the scams. They've also got some nice articles and a forum and stuff.
