The other day I walked out into my back yard and there sitting under my tree was a red fox. I live near a large lake and I have seen snapping turtles, ducks and blue herrons in my yard. But I never thought I would see a red fox. I found out later that day, that there were two that were released in our neighborhood by the Animal control, after they had recovered from some injuries that accured, when they were hit by a car. Both of the foxes are young. I question the reason for releasing the foxes in my neighborhood since it is surrounded by freeways. I can only hope and pray that the two foxes are smart enough to stay away from the traffic. There are many places around here that would have been better for their release back into the wild. (Away from the freeways.) Well this way, if they get hungry, they can alway stop by our local 7-11 store for hot dog or coffee.

Wow, that is amazing. I hope the foxes find enough food to sustain them or they are smart enough to move on. I live in a high rise condo next to a very large park. The other day I was walking in the park when it started to rain. I took shelter under the overhang of a comfort station. There were some Canada geese grazing near by. All of a sudden one of them let out a really unusual scream. I had never heard a goose sound like that. I stepped out and there was a red fox, very thin scrany and hobbling on three legs. We stared at each other for a few seconds and then he limped away. This was in broad daylight too.

Thank you so much for your advice. Yes, I will be careful if I see a wild animal in brad daylight.

They must have been warning other geese about the fox.

They're probably sighted more in the UK because a) it's a much smaller country, and more densely populated, so they don't have quite as many options as to where to live, and b) they've really got no competition per se. The biggest predator we have is the badger, so they're not in competition with racoons, possums, coyotes, etc.

Here in NC I've seen a red fox once, and only once. I went across the street to get the mail, and about 50 feet from me was a beautiful red fox, staring at me. We both stood still, eyeing each other; it truly was a magical moment. He finally turned and went back up the hill.
I haven't seen him again, but I know he is still around. Several cats and chickens have been found and a local vet has said he was sure they were eaten by a fox. So the little guy is still out there, I'm sure.
