The Gun Grabber Gang are decidated to the concept of a gun free society. They challenge gun rights by deindividualizing people into terms like "society", "public" or "city", "state" or "nation". They know that most people are responsible, law abiding citizens, so they turn to lumping us all together to make their points.
Instead of playing their silly little game, we need to turn the question back on them. Instead of answering questions like "why should private citizens have guns", ask them, "why do you want to take my guns?"
What's the difference? If we ask them why they want to take "my" gun, they have to answer it as a personal question about a specific person, instead of a general question. They have to get beyond their stereotyping and hatred for an inanimate object.
"Why do you want to take my gun?" In answering that question, they can't cite "public safety" or "because we would all be better off if there were no guns". They have to make judgements about "me" or "you" as people. How woud the public be safer if "I" didnt' have a gun. My gun has never harmed anyone as long as I've owned it. How would you (Mr, Mrs, Miss or Ms Gun Grabber) be better off if "I" didn't have a gun? How does "my" gun affect your life at all?
If they are honest with themselves, they would have to admit that there is nothing wrong with "me" owning a gun... it's always "well there are people who use them to hurt people". That would be true, and leads us to realistic discussions about gun rights, and realistic gun restrictions... which is what we should be discussing, but we're too busy with mindless, baseless and almost always disproven rhetoric of the Gun Grabber Gang.

I am saddened that there are people who trust their government enough to ask that government to take away their right to bear arms.
