I've noticed that some Mylotters aren't getting high enough ratings........

Hi,I hope I am mistaken about this and I may definitely be mistaken, because I usually don't spend more than 40 minutes on Mylot, only a few times per week.
But, it seems in this international community, that is Mylot, that people who do not have excellent English language skills, have lower numbers beside their user ids than others.
Tell me what I have observed isn't true.
Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is the case. I know I give a positive rating to anyone I see who makes a good discussion or who I reply to. And this is no matter how their English is. I certainly do notice mistakes, but I am understanding and realize there are a lot of people whose first language is not English, so as long and I can understand what they are saying I am completely ok with it. I'm not sure if you are meaning star rating or the big number next to our names. I was just speaking of star rating. On the other hand, the larger number has to do with how many posts we make, and from what I have read, there are some people who don't write English fluently, as they have said they don't.. and it makes sense that they might not feel as comfortable posting as much, since not everyone is so accepting, although from what I see that is not the case, everyone seems very accepting here.

I was referring to the Star ratings.
I rate everyone with a + who responds to a discussion I start.
Actually 2 times, people responded in a negative tone and I didn't rate them at all.
I never form a negative opinion of anyone whose English language skills are not excellent and I rate everyone strictly based on what they have to say.

I have not really noticed that, but I see how it could happen. I think that many of the users rate people on their grammatical skills for good or ill. The content of the message comes first, however if someone is butchering the English language, shouldn't we have the right to vote against them? I understand the point you are making, however it's not usually the ones from other countries doing this.

Thank you for responding to this discussion.
I am interested in hearing what everyone has to say.

It is not true at all. Those stars ratings came from what other Mylot users have rated you on your responds. If they agreed with your respond they would hit "+" button otherwise they would hit "-" if they found your respond disappointing or hurtful, etc. But this was just what I thought.

Yes, what you say makes alot of sense.
I have actually never given anyone a "-" rating.
If I don't like a response I just don't give a "+"

What you have observed isn't true. Sorry, you demanded that I say it. This is very true I think the reason for this has alot to do with the fact that people don't realize there are a lot of foreign users on here and a large number of people just beginning to learn English. If someone I knew was perfectly capable of speaking English and started posting is if it were new I would absolutely give negative feedback. I think one help would be if myLot mentioned this in the feedback guidelines. Experience myLotters learn this and as time goes on that slowly makes a difference. I was one of those people at first but then realized there were foreign users not just people who chose to write with a lack of grammar and spelling.

I do rate, only responses that I do think are useful and on the topic but I do not rate often. I think I may have to agree with oneandmakesix. There is only 1 day here that I made 2 cents (my lowest) and it was the day I made several posts to a discussion that I did not agree with. My posts were lengthy giving evidence that I had researched and referenced.
I have also seen people who have terrible posts (well in my opinion) with stars next to their name. To be quite honest I still don't know clearly how the rating system works.

I haven't really noticed this in terms of the people getting lower ratings having poorer English skills. I've mostly noticed that people who have the lowest ratings answer questions in short answers, post inappropriate discussions, are confrontational, or like to harass people. But, there are people who have lower ratings because someone or a group of someones just didn't like them and attacked their star. So, I don't think low ratings are limited to non-English speakers.

I'm not sure if that's true or not. Many of those with lower numbered stars that I've come across have been individuals who start discussions on hot topics. I figure that's why they have low stars - because people don't agree with them.

What you say makes a great deal of sense and now that I think of it, you have probably discussed the reason for most low star ratings.
Yes, people are probably rated negatively when others disagree with them a great deal.

Well, now I think I am wrong.
Some people who have posted here have given me reasons to change the opinion I originally had on this topic.
