Why some moms are really mean with their child? What are the reasons?

I cannot understand why some mothers are bad with their children. How can you be mean with your own offspring? The extension and continuation of yourself? The only one person that he/she has only you to protect him/her.
Except from cases of real mental illness of the mother, or in the case of rape and the child being the result of it, I cannot understand why some mothers are so cruel with their children.

They do not have patience for a child. So people are easily irritated and should not have kids. My mother is not mother material. She had very little patients for us kids growing up. I think she felt tied down. Some people are meant to me mothers and some just shouldn't. My mother is fine with us now that we are not her everyday responsibility.

i cant even understand it in case of rape.! there are people out there that would gladly adopt if you cant love your child. my mom was worse than most adptive parents would have been im sure. i mean i wasnt the product of rape or anything. its just that after she became unhappy with dad, she kept me anyway and took it out on me. some women just have no mother instinct. hard to understand why.
