We have heard about how our computers can get "sick" from viruses, causing them to shut down when we don't want them to,or send out em-mails we didn't write. Worse still, viruses can cause the whole system to crash. So what exactly are these viruses? Getting rid of a virus is difficult and costly and viruses occupy valuable drive space on computers. What kind of anti-virus device are you using? Do you scan your computer everyday before or after surfing?

Okay... but you should think once before posting such a useless discussion, rather you should visit wikipedia first

Ignorant excuses no man. Of course I know it cannot be that kind of human virus that is attacking human being but it is a software that can damage the computer. This is a place where we share knowledge, the learned people teaches the weaker one. There is nothing to be ashamed of when comes to learning new things. This is part of our community here in mylot. So please do away with your motto.

I've never had any virus problems. Sure I've had detections but they were always resolved fairly easily. If you use common sense while downloading and surfing you can easily avoid infection. I use free antivirus protection from Avira called AntiVir. Its pretty good although less well known than AVG or Avast. I also have ClamWin for on demand scanning for thoroughness.

The damage of virus and other baleful software are very serious. So the anti-virus software is necessary. I use the KAV and AVG protecting my computer. The KAV be used for virus and network safety. The other for malware and spyware etc. I scan my computer once per week.

Oh, even I have anti viruses software on my computer, I still can avoid those viruses. As the viruse always come out at first, when those anti virus software company abserve that, then start to find a progrem to kill it. So, I think we can't avoid those virus, what we can do is becareful when surfing, those suspect file and website, emails don't open them, and don't accept any file from a stranger, maybe we can avoid some, some times we still get the virus on company.

There is a new breed of threats known as Rootkit!. A rootkit is a program that will take control of your computer system without the authorization by the owner. Pretty scary right?. A rootkit will intend to seize control of your operating system running on the hardware.
I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 7 and it's the best. It has a high rate of protection to your pc plus it has rootkit detection which is effective.
Tried NOD32 Smart Security Business Edition but i was still infected with a virus and a spyware. I've also tried BitDefender Total Security 7 but i was not impressed by the protection rate and felt that my pc was vulnerable to those nasty viruses

I am not exactly sure what a virus is other than someone sending some bad content to your computer and it makes your computer not work anymore. I have never had a virus yet. I use Norton Antivirus by Symantec. It protects my computer from being attacked. I don't scan my computer every day. My Norton scans once a week on its own. the protection works 24/7 though in case of an attack from someone.

I have got an anti virus installed that comes in a package with my internet connection. So I am not so worried about this virus that gets into my computer. Every now and then this anti virus will update and protect the computer without me scanning it like I used to before.

The new FireFox3 browser is capable of stopping the proliferation of viruses, I think.I am not using antivirus software at present after installing FF3.

VIRUSES are the real threat for the computer they don't only create problems for us but at the same time they are slowing down the speed of the computer and thus they are to be removed in case they get trapped in the computer system.I am using the AVAST anti virus along withe the SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY and its working very effectively for me and i hardly get any problem because of the virus. The best thing about the antivirus is that it is very easily updated each time you are connected to the internet and it doesn't take much space on the RAM.

When I first started using a computer (1999) I tried Norton, but it didn't work half the time. I tried some others, but ended up with AVG - the free version. Hadn't had any problems since I started using AVG about 4 years ago. I also use ZoneAlarm (free) for my firewall.

spalladino already said the most.
but i'd like to add a little thing for in case you are wondering: virusses and all those other malware are always written by someone first offcourse. it doesn't come in existence on it's own through some kind of evolution like with the real world virusses.
they are written most of the time to boycot other pc users, or to boycot a specific operating system, there are also rumors that antivirus company's pay some people to write some kind of virus... but i found that thought a little paranoid. there are virusses enough already, they don't need to make more.
almost all virusses are written for windows. there are already a few for mac also.
for linux it's very, very rare. So most linux users just don't use some kind of antivirus program, i even wonder if that even exist such a program.
(firewall exists under linux, cause it's used to keep acces from other pc's blocked, not only to keep the worms and virusses out)

My anti-virus is Symantec AntiVirus,it suits to my pc. case of surfing virus that you browse the website and you get a viru download your pc carefulless. I suggest you use firefox, it's safe, some script can't run in the firefox. I never scan my computer everyday, i found if i had a trojan in my pc, the most time i can't clear it at all. so i will rebuild my os... maybe my system skill is poor.

I think the other responses you got pretty much explain what a virus is. I just wanted to respond to tell you what kind of anti-virus I use. I have been using PC-cillin antivirus suite for the last year and have had really good results with it. It also has anti-spyware software, which is a good thing to have as well.
