Former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms died today at the age of 86; it was said on the news a few moments ago that he'd probably have been pleased to have left this life on Independence Day. He was often quite a controversial figure and was known as "Senator No" by both Democrats and Republicans. Everyone here knows I'm a Democrat - at least those who know me - so I won't initiate this post with any disrespect to a man who has just passed away but I'd like to read what you think and thought of him. I think it's possible to discuss someone's legacy as a U.S. Senator without being disrespectful even if there are things you didn't agree with, so let's try to do that. Annie

You know the saying if you can't say anything nice about someone....... So I have nothing to say.

Sadly, I don't think he'll be resting in peace. I'd imagine he's got some 'splainin' to do! Either way, I do send my condolences to those who loved him.

I offer my condolences to those he's left behind, but I cannot appreciate a human being that tried so hard to oppress others. He was a gay-bashing racist, and I cannot respect either aspect in a human being.
