Does Russell T Davies need to be a TINY bit more imaginative with names?

Lawrence Miles pointed this out on his blog last weekend when The Stolen Earth was shown; is the reason Rose couldn't join in on the video linkup because her surname wasn't Smith or Jones? Look at who was on it. Martha Jones. Sarah Jane Smith (with Mr. Smith in the background). The folks at Torchwood (with, of course, Ianto Jones). Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister. And eventually, the Doctor himself. Who, when he bothers to give a name, almost always goes by John Smith. I dunno, this just amused me for some reason.

I didn't even notice that! Now that Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister you know, has sacrificed herself for her country so to speak, there will be room for little Miss Tyler! And come to think of it, how noble is Miss Donna Noble?

Yeah, I'm half-suspecting some kind of 'reset switch' ending tomorrow, a bit like they did last year when the last eighteen months hadn't happened. I kinda hope not, but we shall see...

The name "Torchwood" was used for all Doctor Who correspondence before the 2005 premiere, because they didn't want anything to be revealed early. Later, they decided to use the name for the spin-off show.

I also liked 'Mister Saxon', which was an anagram of 'Master no. six'. And of course, John Simm was the sixth actor to play him ;)

It might be cross-pollinating, too! Both Rose and Sam Tyler are time-travellers on different shows.

Davies does that intentionally I heard, the reusing of the names, specifically because he isn't very clever with them I think? I don't remember the real reason but it seems plausible enough. By the way, as to Donna being a Time Lord-- that is TOTALLY what me and boyfriend want to happen. It would be both hilarious and awesome at the same time. I want it to be the way it turns out, I mean they are hinting around enough that she's somehow super important and so forth. I can't tell if I want her to be Romana or the Rani more. (Or you know someone new but Davies seems to like tying things into other things.)

Which is odd, because when he gets going with names, he's really in a field of his own. Look at the events of the Time War we've heard vague references to: The Medusa Cascade, the Silver Devastation, the Cruciform, Elysium and Arcadia, the Nightmare Child... Or his species names in the End of the World: The Moxx of Balhoon, the Adherents of the Repeated Meme. And my favorite, the Slitheen homeworld, Raxacoricofallapatorius. I had to look 90% of those up on Wiki, btw. I'm not THAT big a geek ;) But he can be damned creative with the names when he wants to be. Admittedly, some of the Smiths and Joneses existed before ever wrote for the show, but still... There's also the thing with the Master's ring being picked up by a woman's hand in the last series. Was it Donna? Was it Harriet Jones? Someone else? RTD is claiming he's not following it up, and he left it in in case a future production team wanted to bring back the Master. But he's been known to tell porkies before to put fans off the scent ;) There's definitely a big reveal brewing with Donna, but I've no idea what. And I've a pretty good idea what's happening with the regeneration, having heard from a source weeks beforehand, and who's invariably right. There's definitely some fun things planned tomorrow ;)
