"Standing is no indication of any patriotism or the absence of it. It can be just concluded that, it's an expected public manners to stand up if played in an appropriate place and occasion!"
Do you agree with this?
On a lighter note, what do you do when it is being played?
Do you rise?
Just curious!
I do rise if I am in a situation to. However, I feel, respect for the National anthem or the National Flag is a thing which is probably more explicit images of nationalism. What about the seething anti-nationals that we are? I wonder!

Patriotism or not, expected or unexpected behavior, i do rise whenever the national anthem is being played unless of course if I can not do it at the moment.
I love my country, I bet everyone here feels the same towards their country. small acts of patriotism gives a lot of impact in how we behave, act, work, feel towards our country.

Yes, these small acts do make us feel so patriotic, so responsible towards out nationality. I do stand up every time it's being played but do not see any justification of playing it on a movie hall.
Thanks.

I do stand when a National Anthem is played and it's not limited to my own country's either. It is a sign of respect to do this and everyone should make the effort to do the same in my opinion. They always played the National Anthem of India while showing the flag before every movie when I lived there and I always stood alongside everyone else. I obviously didn't sing it or anything and will only sing along to my own; but I did stand out of respect for everyone around me and for the country that was my home at the time.

Hi James,
I think we must for not only as our respect for out country and the matrys but also to lead the children through actually doing it ourselves. In India when the multiplexes play the National Anthem with all those criticisms, we stand up, it feels good and I sing along. It's feel sop good to be a proud Indian. I haven't had a chance to be present when other country's NA being played but I would most definitely stand up and it would come from within.
Here, I want to mention another thing James. I have never felt so much comfortable talking to any other national regarding India's intricacies and values. You, being widely traveled know what is it to make people feel good and special. Thanks for that. Do like the Romans when in Rome - and you do it so from heart.
I really appreciate.

Well I just cannot sit while the National Anthem is played even if it is at home and no one is around me.I feel as though I am committing a crime if I do it.If other people are there sitting around I immediately ask them to switch channel or switch off the television.I cannot bear it even if the sound is in mute on the remote control. If it is on the road that I hear it being played on a loudspeaker,I stand in attention whether anyone is around me or not.Anywhere, for that matter I do it.
The same thing goes for my school song too and though I am 52 yrs ols and it is 37 years that I left school I cannot bear to sing it sitting, If I intend demonstrating to anyone at home how my school song is.[Normally however, I donot do it;it is not that one goes around singing school songs at this age like a madcap but on the rarest of occasion I sang once to tell my son how it sounded.

Hi mimipi, I always stand when my National Anthem is played. It is the correct thing to do if I am out in a public place but if it is being played on the TV in my home I do not. I would never leave this country to live so I guess I am very patriotic even though there are many things I don't agree with right now so I guess it would make me a bit hypocritical too in a way, which I am not by nature. Ellie :D

Same here. I totally endorse your views. Recently I caught hold of some beautiful renditions of our national anthem by various artists and I am just loving every bit of it.
Do you listen to your NA otherwise as well?

Hi! I do stand up when the National Anthem is being played. Its kinda like common courtesy and for me it is a sign of respect because if you dont have respect for it and no qualms of the implications not standing might bring well then why stand up at all? Standing might not actually mean anything but to some people it does. Why go through all the trouble of getting off your comfortable seat just to look at some stupid flag right? If you do it just means that it means something to you. It might not be a huge thing to do but with most simple gestures, they mean a lot.^_^

I do rise and stand to attention when I hear the national anthem being played anywhere (unless I hear it when I'm crossing the road).
My husband thinks I'm crazy. I rise even when my son plays the national anthem on the keyboard at home (he's practising for school...he plays it during the assembly). I can't help it. I do it automatically.
But when I hear it played well...I feel patriotic.

I can't stop myself from standing up when the National Anthem is played.
Yesterday, when they were showing pictures of the matyrs of the terrorist attack, the Anthem was played in the background. I was so moved (I was already upset by what was happening...I still am and am shaking as I type this), and my son and I stood up hearing the Anthem. I had tears in my eyes and was proud of the people who had played a part but at the same time I was also saddened by the fact that many lives were lost in vain. I also realized that I was safe at home because the forces were working in such dangerous situations (though I also feel that our security situation in India could be stronger than it is).

I do respect our national anthem and national flag and if I am in position to stand up, when the national anthem is being played, I do stand up. We hear our national anthem, only on few occasions and I feel, whenever we hear it, as a mark of respect, we should rise to the occasion.

Yes deepak, we only get to hear it only on a countable few occasions and that's actually good. Recently some cineplexes have started to play our NA, which I do not approve of.

I have not had the experience of hearing nation anthem in a multiplex, but if it is so....I think, it is not a bad idea either to remind people about of national pride and everyone should stand on hearing it, even if he is multiplex.

Difficult one this, I am a British Indian and don't feel any patriotism towards any flag or song of any country. I can't remember the last time I heard the UK National Anthem and I would most definitely not stand up for it and don't even know the words to it. It has nothing to do with not feeling British for I was born here and have lived here for over 40 years - it's to do with the UK not really having a sense of patriotism.
I find it interesting that many Americans and very patriotic and get very upset if people insult their flag - I remember an episode of Fraser when his upstairs neighbour hung a huge flag from his window, thereby blocking out Fraser light from his balcony but he felt he couldn't complain because the other neighbours would find his complaint disrespectful to the flag, it was highly amusing but did highlight just how patriotic Americans are and highlighted that we don't have such a sense of patriotism in the UK. It's got to such a stage now that people are scared to put up a flag as it's deemed racist to non-Brits which is ridiculous! Do the Americans refuse to put up their flag for such a silly reason? *sigh* political correctness has gone mad!

That's a valid point you have made mili. I remember my aunt telling me an incident where she was cautioned on her saree hung on which had US flag color! This is too strong a feeling, I guess. And also the fact that in Britain you are hesitant to hoist yours for reason that you have stated, is kind of non acceptable to me.
I feel patriotism is something very beautiful, sacred and remains within. we need not make much ado about it when there are too many things on the agenda and we are almost turning deaf ear to those!

Love towards Nation and to our family must come from within, and it can't be imposed on any one. Even if done it may not be a long lasting one. I feel it as a honour and pride to be an Indian and i respect our National Anthem and flag, with all respect.

I don't think it is a written rule anywhere that one must rise when the National Anthem is played. But I always do out of love and respect for my country and those who have sacrificed their lives for me.

I stand every time I am in a position when I can. Although I must admit that it is not out of respect for how the nation actually is today, it is more respecting the ideals that we stand for. I also stand and face the flag or music because I respect the people who have given their lives to protect those ideals and things that I enjoy. I don't feel proud of a lot of what happens in the United States, but I am proud of the ideals it was founded upon even if we are not perfect.

I really appreciate the way you have put it. We may not be proud of lot of things happening in our nation but we certainly value the freedom that we got or the culture we belong to and of course when we hear it we feel so patriotic irrespective of the bleak things.
Thanks.

Only seldom that I hear our national anthem played aside from when I'm in my kids' school or whenever inside the cinema, before the 1st showing the national anthem is being played.
I may not be very nationalistic person or a patriot of our nation but I still give my respect whenever it is being played.

My father in-law is a great gandhian and even today he salutes and respects national anthem. Do you remember during war time, they introduced national anthem in cinema theatres and people use to rush to exit gates?
Honestly speaking I do not stand up when I hear national anthem. But when I participate in any function where they sing national anthem, we all stand up in unison and sing. Otherwise the spirt of 1947 is only history which should not have been.

I would get up in a public gathering if the national anthem is played, and now that I reflect on why I would do it, it would be for 2 reasons. Firstly As you say it is public manners in showing your respect. Secondly, because these are some of the ideas of nationalism drilled into us since our childhood.
Yes, I am of the view that these are our convenient and chosen ways of saying that we are patriotic. Most of us would not do the things which according to me display our nationalism or patriotism. These would include our social and envoirnmental responsibilities as an example.

I think it's only appropriate to stand up when the national anthem is being played. It's only for a few minutes anyways. Why be too lazy to stand up? It's one way of honouring your motherland. At least we could do that little thing for her.
