Are you photographing the Light Or are you photographing the Subject?

This is a tough question.Come to think of it...we've always bring our camera with us whenever we hit the road. I've always wanted to get a good shot on a subject/light. But what's bothering me is... am i photographing to take a shot on the subject or the light? There are times that you take a shot on a subject/light without planning and the result is awesome. I know this is a BIG deal for me.

I photograph the subject with the light hitting the subject. That's just me. Sometimes I take too long to get the picture just right I think. The result of a good shot can come from being spontaneous without planning once in a while. I think through your experience with the camera you'll find out what's best. Good luck with that. Both should be focused. The composition of light and subject makes the image beautiful. For instance, if you are taking portrait of a person in a tense light at background, you need to balance the exposure so that you can see the face of the person clearly. But sorry i am not much professional here. Well i am telling what i did.

sunset - I was more interesting in the lighting than the subject (trees)
The subject and lighting go hand in hand, I have always been able to 'see' the picture before I take it, or 'see' a picture and grab the camera. One of the important parts of photography is the perspective, whether you emphasize the lighting (such as a sunset) or the object (mountain, person, etc). I have taken pictures of a subject, and there would be some tiny detail that I didn't notice until I printed the picture, that adds to the composition of the picture and turns out awesome.

I always pay attention to the light so i can make the most important decision first.Whats a photo with bad lighting? Secondly I think the subject and the light go very much hand in hand.

I think the first consideration in photography is the light, its effect on the subject or its effect in the photography itself. There are times when you're subject is the light itself like in fireworks or the effects of moving car lamps on the road at night. Now i'm confused. lol.
