Why is it that Online Poker is Generally Illegal in the US?

I'm really curious about this issue. There are so many US players that cannot register in most online Poker rooms. Why does the US government restrict their citizens if they want to play online? Are there vested interests that are going to be hurt by online poker games and online casino gaming?
