When it comes to your health, are you big on prevention?

What I mean is this, are you the type of person who schedules super regular doctor visits, checkups for everything, followups, recommended tests or specialist appts, etc? Or do you just do your best to make healthy choices and see your doctor for a quick annual visit for things such as ongoing birth control or if you have a concern about something like a mole or losing weight or high blood pressure?
I am starting to wonder how much is brought on ourselves by doctors prescribing too many followups, testing, or referrals to specialists. I am also definitely on the side of I do not ASK for trouble. Therefore, if I feel fine and I'm doing fine, I am not going to push my luck and go visit a doctor 3 times a year anyway just because and in the process have them discover that I'm not FINE - but that it isn't something serious and I wouldn't even know about it if I wasn't so overzealous.
What about you, what's your take?

I don't go to the doctors often, but I have a appointment this Monday...have a ailing problem that has been going on and off for 6 months now, and it's time to find out what it is. But for the most part I don't go. But there is this woman online that I know that makes me want to go to the doctor because of the headache she gives me! :P

Well this is probably tmi for you but you know that woman online that gives you headaches? I think she may have to head to urgent care to get something to get rid of a uti.
BTW I used to think that *I* was bad about not going to the doctor. My best friend is worse. I go if I realize I really need to go because something is not right, but even when it gets to that point with her, she WON'T GO. I swear my eyes are going to pop out of my head and roll around on her floor if she continues to do this. I worry about her!

I don't see a doctor much, just yearly because I use bc and once in awhile if I get sick and it requires antibiotics. If I could get antibiotics over the counter for something I knew I had, then I wouldn't need to visit my doctor more than the annual to make sure all was good with the bc.

I've always been big on healthy eating, exercise and all other vices in moderation, so I guess you could call that preventative medicine. lol But I also believe in regular checkups whether I feel I need them or not. I'd rather know than not know and leave things too late.

I do a basic regular checkup, but I don't feel compelled to do a complete physical every year. I'm aware that I probably don't hear as well as I did 20 years ago, but I don't need a test to tell me that, I'm sure that i'm no longer 20/20 but I'm good enough to pass at the dmv, I worked my butt off to get back in shape and I'm in better shape now at 33 after having my daughter than I was at 29 BEFORE having her.... and I eat better most of the time, partially to ensure I'm a good example for her too. I weigh things carefully, I make sure that if I do something, it doesn't cause another problem for me to deal with. If something would make my life more difficult in the long run, I won't do it. The benefits always have to outweigh the risks.

I only go to the doctors if it is absolutely necessary. I only go if I know in myself that there is nothing I can do for myself at home. I have no check ups or anything like that unless I am called in for any reason.

I generally feel that way too. Why invite trouble? I did ask for a recheck on some bloodwork about a year ago because I was worried about my cholesterol. I am a pretty active gym-goer to make sure I don't have to worry about that again. Everything is fine now.

Perfect time for this conversation because right now Im trying to find a Doctor for myself because I have only been to Planned PArenthoods since I've gotten on my own. I like them better and I am not a big advocate of conventional medicine and if given a prescription for some dumb medicine I do not need I'll throw it away and try healthier things like fixing my diet and exercise. I usually always research things online before I see a doctor but now I was ordered to get a physical by my dentist so I have to confiscate doctors records from my childhood and Im am not happy because thats going to take some work I have not been to a doctor in so long. I do not even remember my dad taking me to a doctor when I went to live with him and he never gave me medicines so I guess I get it from him but I could never thank him more.
Even with our daughters I refrain from taking them from the doctors because they prescribe useless medicine every time I take them which I throw away--and antibiotics it seems like whenever you mention a cough which have never worked, Its like they get commission selling it.
Thankfully, my boyfriend does not agree with these practices either but I think thats because his mom is a hypochondriac and has literally 50-100 medicines and he does not like it.

I used Planned Parenthood exclusively when I was out on my own at 20 and I would recommend them, at least the clinic I used. I'm not a big advocate of conventional medicine either, I mean if a prescription is necessary, I'll take it as long as it is something you take for a round and you're done. I don't think I would use any medication chronically but that's a different subject.
Why were you ordered to get a physical by your dentist? That sounds kind of funny to me. I've actually heard it in reverse, a doctor would say 'I'm concerned about your oral health. You need to see a dentist'
As far as my daughter, her ped office is great. They were very supportive of things like nursing and co-sleeping, they thought it was great that I was able to stay home with her and raise her myself. They do prescribe antibiotics if there is an infection present (like ear infection, sinus infection) but if an illness is not bacterial, they will send you home or tell you on the phone that you do not need to be seen.
Nothing disturbs me more than hypochondriacs, well maybe munchausen's by proxy but both... there's something wrong with people like that.

I was told to get a physical because I got an infection on one side of my mouth but not the other and they could not figure out why and still trying to figure it out because theres some bone loss near my wisdom tooth (thankfully) that they said seemed rapid considering my age. Well I was talking to my mom and she said she had something called T&J that is where your jaw in not aligned and you wear one side of your mouth down more than the other and your not even supposed to chew gum and I do like crazy, thats what I think it is. They just wanted me to get a physical to make sure there was no underlying conditions affecting my oral health.

Prevention! Definitely. I don't go to the Dr. for colds, upset stomach, aches, etc. There's always something natural to handle the symptoms of the daily discomforts we encounter. I try to eat a good balanced diet, get plenty of exercise, and, being an herbalist, I take some herbal teas or incorporate herbal vinegars and fresh or dried herbs into my diet on a regular basis to keep all my internal parts working properly.
I agree that going to the Dr. for every little thing is a bad idea. Dr.s are very prone to prescribe SOMETHING for any little ache or complaint just to keep from being sued for malpractice or some such nonsense, and many times the prescriptions carry side effects worse than the symptom. I'm not a big fan of the medical community on the whole. I have finally found a wonderful family Dr. that I can trust when I can't handle my problem on my own.

I try to handle things on my own first as well. I don't mind if a doctor prescribes something if it's necessary, but if the side effects outweigh the benefits, it's time to think about other options. I always like having ALL the options out on the table and then I make a decision. Sometimes I've already narrowed down my options to the ones that are acceptable to me, but I still want to hear about them all just to be sure.

Dear friend,
I just go for visit of doctor if I get any type of disease or any other unavoidable case that cannot with stand without consulting a doctor. May be I take regular exercise and hope prevention is better in my case. Hence I try that nothing come to me to go to doctors. As far as possible I like to be healthy and try my best to keep my healthy with out medicines may as I am a veteran I do find it more comfortable without any stomach problems.

Prevention is better than cure. I learned that the hard way when I lost my father. It's better to visit the doctor often or at a regular basis. At the same time keeping healthy habits and food intake. It's actually hard to get a cure for certain diseases so prevention anticipates that. If you can prevent diseases then you wouldn't have to go through any painful process of recovering from it. My dad was diagnosed of lung cancer, and the sad thing about it is that it was on stage 4 already when they found out about it. We tried all means to cure him, but in the end, God took him from us. Maybe so as to make things easier for him since he is a good man.

Well I take vitamins every morning. And I actually notice that I get ill far less then I did when I wasn't taking anything. I hate going to doctors and calling in sick. But I know that vitamins alone won't keep the nasties away from me LOL.

i'm a nurse and i work at a hospital but doctor's i know never recommend us to visit them on regularbasis just for check ups but instead they advised us to regularly take vitamins and supplements, drink a lot of water, get enough sleep, proper diet and to have regular work outs or simple exercises just to promote proper blood circulation and that we should just visit the doctors when really necessary.... coughs and colds need not to go for check ups when you could just rest, rehydrate and drink first aid meds for coughs and colds and juice is good for colds... fevers can be done with sponge bath, hot soup, plenty of rest, plenty water in take and of course paracetamol

I only go see the doctor a few times a year for check-ups and physicals. I try to prevent illness more than rely on other people to do it for me. I eat right all the time (except holidays), exercise regularly, and take vitamins and minerals daily. I'm the only one that knows if I'm fine. I also do mental health exercises like meditation, writing down bad thoughts I have then writing responses to those bad thoughts, and just keep my mind busy. Also, whenever I do feel sick I usually don't try to focus on it and tell myself "I'm fine" and most of the time it goes away quickly.
