Sleeping at Wrong Hours!

What can a person do to get back on track to sleep at regular night time hours? I've tried getting up extra early in the morning after having fallen to sleep mayble only 2 hours earlier. So I stay awake all day in hopes I can go to bed at a decent hour, at least by 12 am(which is early for me, believe it) then I'll go and lay down, and nothing! After spending about an hour tossing and turning I'll get back up. This is even after taking some sort of sleep-aid. I've tried natural sleep-aids, over the counter sleep aids, prescribed sleep aids, and have cut waaayy down on caffeine. When I finally fall asleep I sometimes don't wake up until after 1:00 pm, which I hate, because then I've missed a lot of things and feel like I've started the day off wrong, and at times I've been unable to sleep for 2 days straight! I would appreciate any help or suggestions..what do you do or have tried to help you sleep?

Eye mask and ear plugs to block out all light and all sound. Like a miracle if you have Fibromyalgia. Annie

Hi Anne, Wanted to let you know that I have an eyemask and am going to try it out. It's one that has the gel inside that you can freeze or heat up, but I'm not sure if I should do either of those. I didn't get any earplugs yet though but I've also started trying to meditate when I get into bed and it worked a couple of times and the times it didn't work I think I was blocking it or something. Thank you for your helpful suggestions!

If you don't have a black out eye mask and ear plugs, try this until you get them: put a bath towel, folded lengthwise, across your eyes and ears. You will be surprised how this works. You should fall asleep - to good sleep - in about 3 minutes and stay there all night. Go to the bathroom first. And, if you have GERD, be sure to chew a couple of tums and drink a little water. Sweet sleep, sweetheart. Annie

I will definately give that a try. The thing is, I've always been a "night owl" but did make it to sleep usually by 1 or 2 a.m. I'm not into sports except for watching them..lol, but I do like to dance and bought a Dance Revelation game, but have yet to open it, so I'll give that a try. I'm also thinking about rollerskating again, the 4-wheel kind at the local rink, but my kids go there every once in a while and talk about how wild it is but I might give it a try! Thanks for responding!

I wish I could find an answer to that question. My problem is I fall asleep but can only sleep an hour or two at a time.My counselor says I am controlling my sleep so I don't dream.I do have awful nightmares,or have had at times. However I don't know how one can force themselves to wake up but that is what she says I am doing.I sleep an hour wake up for a couple hours then sleep for two,and I am up for three. If I have an appointment or something it is awe full because I can't wait to get home and get back to sleep because I am always tired. Hi Jasmine, That's very interesting that your counselor says you're controlling your sleep..I didn't know we could do that, thought it seems that if I have an appointment that next day and do go to sleep thinking about the appointment I wake up on time, or just a bit before the alarm goes off. One thing I never did was go back to sleep during the day once I was up, but now a sudden tiredness seems to hit me at odd times throughout the day and I have to really fight to stay awake. I do this because I think if I go to sleep in the middle of the afternoon or day, I won't be able to sleep at night. Do you use any of the over the counter sleep medicines or has your counselor prescribed something to help you sleep?

The world is a less irritating place when everyone else is in bed. So our bodies are choosing that. Instead, get the good sleep you need, and you'll want to be awake with the rest of the world. annie

I do enjoy it more when everyone else is sleep, my whole neighborhood is quieter. It feels like I can think better and get more done without dealing with everyone else and noise. I'm thinking of stressing less about when I sleep, as long as I get enough sleep when I do. It just seems to annoy my family more when I sleep in the daytime!

LadyT1208 OMG so I,M not the only one.I,ve been going through this since like 1997.Of course mine is due to meds and pain.So because of it .I am always looking for remedies myself.Make sure your room is a relaxing place to be in.No mess.Keep all destracting things out.Let that be your sanctuary.Colors you like scents you like.Lavender,Vanilla whatever you like.Read a bit.It may tire your eyes and help.Focus on your breathing.Be very aware of each breathe, just concentrate on that. And visualize one thing you find relaxing. For me it has always been.Thinking of when I was in a beach in Puerto Rico just floating in the water face up,looking at the sky. There were only four people in the beach. It helps if its something you've done. You don't want it to be such a stretch. Also it helps to be as active as you can.Not to just be awake. And really take a look at what you are eating.Sometimes we only pay attention to caffeine. But there is also sugar, salt acidic foods, potential unknown allergies.Your overall health is a big factor.Hormones and cortisol levels. If you really can't attribute your sleeping patterns to anything in particular.I would see if you can get a sleep study done.It isn't good for your health. It affects your eating habits,I'm sure your snacking more and will gain weight due to poor sleeping. It also can lead to depression left untreated. Hope this helps,Wishing you Sweet Dreams,Roni707

Haha very good question. Since losing my job a few months back, I"ve become a complete night owl, staying up until the wee hours of morning! I've been known to stay up until 3, 4, or 5 in the morning and sleep past 1 or 2 in the afternoon while my husband is at work. It's annoying to say the least. I hate waking up feeling like all I've done is waste the day!

My first experiences at being a night owl started when I was a little kid. In thinking back the only times I wasn't was when I conformed to a 9 to 5 for years, but still pushed it by staying up longer than I should and ending up going to work on only a few hours a sleep. No matter what time I go to sleep though, if I go at all, if I sleep past 12 pm, I feel like I've missed a lot and it also feels like the remaining hours go by faster. That part is ok since I work from home and make my own schedule.

My sleep time has been changed since I graduated high school back in 2004. Now I sleep during the day and wake up after 3pm. It really sucks. I've tried to change, but I end up tossing and turning at night. At the same time I get a lot done at night, writing wise. A lot of my projects I've worked on has been because of my weird hours.

You're so right about getting more things done at night! Lucky for me I make my own hours as far as work goes, even though it came to me that might be part of the problem. Maybe I'll set different schedules for myself, though it's better for my work to have less daytime noise. Thanks for your input!
