Would you rather rent and not have to deal with upkeep of a house or buy and say it is your own and deal with all the repairs and bills that go with it?

I hope to never have to rent again after this. We would love to own our own home, and hopefully some day soon we will.

You don't get anything out of renting other than a place to live. They only thing I would say that would be a benefit of renting would be ease of leaving. It's harder to sell a house than to move out of some place your renting.

I would rather have my own house. I don't like renting a house. I dream of having a nice little cottage surrounded by an acre or two of land, where I can grow the plants of my dreams and enjoy a quiet, serene life. :) Cheers and happy mylotting

If you stay in a place for a long time, it's better buy than rent. After I paid up my mortgage, my monthly expenses is only half of my friend's monthly rent.

The equity you get by buying a house is really worth it. When I sell my house, I will have money to retire on. Renting would give me nothing at the end of the lease.

I prefer to own a house than rent even through I have to bear all the repairsand other bills. Because when you rent a house, finally you get nothing.

this depends on a lot of things, like your financial situation, your interest, your personality, etc. i bought a house before but just sold it when i realized i wanted to explore other areas and not continue paying the loan balance. then when i had the opportunity to buy a house a few years after, i opted to invest it in a business to get some cash back (earnings) right away instead of paying for home mortgage interest and wait for years for the property to appreciate. plus, being a traveller, i still don't know where i really want to settle :) so there, to buy or to rent depends on a lot of factors, especially on ones you consider significant in your current personal situation.

We have been renting since we came to Canada 3 years ago but we managed to get a house of our own. I guess it is still better to own a house because you can change whatever you want in the house whenever you want.

Buying a house gains equity. Renting gains nothing.

It depends how long you intend to stay in the area or in the house, your financial situation, etc. I prefer to own a house despite the upkeep because with renting, often you cannot do anything, including improvements. Rent tends to be more expensive than a mortgage and you cannot gain any equity through renting, unless you have a rent/lease to own option and have money to put down and convert it to a loan.
