Technically, the number means the number of discussions you have been involved with. If you would notice, the number increases every time you start a discussion or respond to a new discussions. However, if you just comment of the responses in your own discussion, your number doesn't increase. This is because you have already been involved in that discussion. It is also true if you respond to a discussion you have already responded to, your number won't also increase.
So what are the benefits of having these number increase? After reaching your 100th number, you will now have a star, which measures how popular you are here in mylot. after you have reached the 200th mark, you can now use the emoticons and other mylot codes and you can now add photos to your discussion. After you have reached the 500th mark, you can now use the copy/paste privilege and you can now add photo to your responses and comments.
