Dzien Dobry,
I sincerely do not think that food prices have risen up a mere 75 percent, I think that it is safe to say they have risen at least 100-150 percent. Factors Include fuel, that may or may not have been included in the reports; Weather/Natural Disasters, Consumer demand, But that of course is locally. But in Global news, they are both wrong.
I think also that not all of the transportion cost is transferred to the consumer, but only a fraction due to the vast quantities that they transfer at a time.
Apart from that, im sure that food costs would not be so high if they werent giving away free food to africa all the time for free. Im sure that if people in africa were able to set their mind to it, they can plant some seeds, or herd some animals for food.
But that is just in my opinion any ways..

I agree with your point of view.....it is scary now to see what is going on in Global community....
Maybe it is the way to teach Africans how to fish, not giving them fish when hungry....

You can do just about anything with statistics. Deeper into the report, this is stated: "use of corn for ethanol by the United States had consumed more than 75 percent of global corn production over the past three years."
So what's with the 75% he's hung up on? I think that, with numbers so disparate (from the government's 3% estimation to a 75% figure by the World Bank) we need to be very cautious about believing them.
The real factors are probably numerous: Extreme weather has made a definite impact, higher transportation costs, ethanol certainly plays a role, the diminishing number of bees for pollination as well as overall inflation, all have their impact.
It's easy enough to blame the Bush administration on everything, but even the President can't do everything!

I think ever increasing prices of petroleum products are the main cause of price rise. With the increase in the rates of petrol etc. everything goes up. We in India also facing this problem, prices of essential commodities are going up day by day and it is becoming to manage affairs, with limited income/resources.

Hi dear
i agree with what report is saying, if u will use all the food to get the enegry then sure it will be expensive, if u r using 75% of any thing then sure demand will increase, supply will decrease and result in High Cost
Other thing, the next times farmers will be harvesting only such crops and resulting in shortages of other crops.. again rule of supply and demand.
So we should discourage Bio Fuels and encourage hyrdral, and nuclear energy
Take care

well the only reason is ...increasing prices of oil and gas...surely...when prices of
such reservoirs increases ....which are used daily...then the prices of all these common need stuff raises...especially food....

Yhe consumer pays for all cost increases, whether it be fuel labor or anything else associated getting goods to the retailer. And as most of the links in the chain work in percentages, the increase is much greater by the time the consumer pays.

for sure the gas prices rise
why the gas prices rise thats what I am wondering
since I don't have to drive to work or business it doesn't cost me as much as other people, but what if they need to drive to work or their business relies on transportation?
sorry pola, I really don't know the correct answer to your question it can be many things but I believe if those in power have good intentions there will be an end to this
or else, then it will be just the beginning of the worst to come

It might sound some what harsh, when i say that Bush administration and World bank are not two different things.. The former controlling the second is vivid thing.
In this point i would like to register my protest,..to the Bush statement.."that price hike in Food prices are due to the reason that developing countries like India, and China are consuming more food than before" ...
My friend Pola, does not this seem to be so very ordinary.. So mean comment to be passed on.. When i am in for open argument, not with you my friend, but defending what Mr Bush, has said.. i will be compelled to make the comparisons between the style of living between the two countries..and cost of living per person etc..but i desist from doing so, as, it will make this healthy forum somewhat disturbed.
Take care pola..and by the way.. i again, make it clear that i am personally not against any friend here, but definitely against what Mr. Bush has said.

I think part of it is transportation costs. But some of it is also due to packaging costs, since a lot of packaging (plastic and wax) is made from petroleum. Then there is fear - real and imagined food shortages, creating more demand and the willingness to pay the extra to get whatever it is.

Dear friend,
The main aspect behind the price rise of food in our place is the rising cost of fuel and gas. More over an inflation has also been arise and the government is working on it. The finance ministry has informed that this would last for some periods and this could be easily adjusted by the people. Any how not only food other goods that are brought through transportions are also affected. The much bitter part is on the poor and middle class people have to suffer this price increase.

I really think the reason that the food prices have gone up so much so quickly is directly linked to the higher cost of gasoline. It costs them more to ship the food via truck, airplane, whatever and the trickle down theory makes the increase in cost of shipping increase the cost of the products being shipped. I sure hope the economy can turn around. We really need to get some raises now to help offset the prices that have gone up for everything around us!

I honestly have a hard time believing anything Bush has to say, but beyond that, I feel the things they say about corn are downright untrue. Corn is not as good for you as they would have us believe. In fact there is information out there that shows just the opposite, the increase in use or corn amd corn products has not help nutrition because there is very little of it that our body uses. In fact one of the chemicals in it inhibits the absortion of iron.
Reasearch also shows a widespread increase in health problems in entire civilizations and societies immediately after it's inroduction in their diets. Grains in general have only one things that increases their uses in society and that it is cheap to grow and produce. Arteriosclerosis was found in the remains of Egytians right after grains became a staple in their diets. And corn for feed in cows ahs a long term bad effect on humans eating beef. They did well on grass which is thier natural choice of food.

This is well said. I don't believe myself in corn products as healthy food.
Corn for cows? yes, they like grass better.

Fuel is a major factor because most supermarket produce is trucked thousands of miles before it reaches the shelves. That's why I try to buy locally as much as possible...it's cheaper.
I would think the World Bank is a lot closer to the truth than the Bush Administration.
Most food in the U.S. is grown on "factory farms" owned by mega multi-national corporations such as ADM. Greed enters into it a lot. They saw an opportunity to exploit a minor problem and raise their profit margin through the roof.

I was thinking about this the other day, that too bad instead of having picked on corn as a biofuel and tapping into corn as a foodstuff that another source couldn't be used...like uh, weeds??? There's plenty of that..LOL. But whatever the problem is, and the finger pointing as to who is to blame...rising costs of gas, use of corn, blah, blah, blah...we the consumer are the ones hit with rising costs..I couldn't believe it when I went to the supermarket the other day...three ears of fresh corn went for $2.50.

Well, Bush is a liar--all politicians are--so I would take the World Bank's figures and cut them by half or a third and you'll probably be closer to the truth. It's reprehensible to use food as fuel with all the starving people in the world.

We wouldn't have people starving if we don't have animal farming....
I agree it has to be something else for fuel not food...
