When youre reading a mystery do you read the last few pages first?

My sis does that. When she has read halfway through the book she turns the pages and reads the last of the book leaving out half the book unread. I can never bring myself to do that... It is because i want to enjoy and savour the book fully. So i read every page and every line if it is interesting. So tell me do you read the end of an interesting book just because you do not have the patience to read it fully? Or you felt you had to know what happened in the end?

Oh no! I could never do that either. What's a mystery without the suspense? If I know how things will turn out, then I am not in suspense. Suspense in a mystery is created when you fear that the hero won't come out alive. Of course, you know that they will. But you fear they won't. That puts you in a state of suspense. Once I was reading a romance novel and skipped a chapter purposely to read ahead. The story had been moving along too slow. By the time I decided to go back and read the missing chapter, the suspense element had left. I missed all the build up in the relationship. I have not done that since then. Thanks for the insightful and intelligent discussion. So much fun to talk about books and reading. Be well. Beauty Queen

Hello Naseeha, hope you are doing good. Actually am with your sister. But i would be curious to know the ending . I will read the last pages, but will not leave the book unread. I try to get over my curiosity by reading the last pages and then finish the whole novel. I have inexhaustible patience, but curious to know the climax Blessings! take care, happy mylotting

shes so impatient!!well no i dont read in advance just to know the ending ..i guess the suspense and the thrill will be outlived and cant really picture out the minute details on the pages i had not read..if im going to that i might as well watch a movie instead of reading!!

Of course you cannot completely understand what happened if youre going to skip so many pages... Its just that people like my sis dont have the patience to read it fully...

No way in the world could I do that! I agree with you, naseeha - you have to enjoy the whole story before finding out what eventually happens. I can't understand why anybody would turn to the last page for a peek!

Please read the responses that have followed yours. There seem to be many people who read the end first... I dont understand at all

Amazing - I never would have believed so many people would do that. It wouldn't occur to me to do it, so it's a big surprise.

Heck no! Why would you want to ruin the suspense by reading the end first! I do admit that when I pick up a magazine I go from back to front - a little weird, but its not like reading the end of a book first. Oh well, to each his own, so they say!

a magazine is completely different.... you can read it in any order of your choice because it has individual articles .... not one single story...

Well that sounds just crazy to me. First off, most good novels have a great ending which cannot be summerized in a few pages, sometimes not even in a few chapters. Second, the point of a mystery novel is to keep yourself in suspense until you start to solve it yourself and either proof yourself right or wrong.

Of course you should read a book only if you want to enjoy it thoroughtly and you should have the patience to read it . But there seem to be so many people who peek in at the end when they are halfway through.... Thats a nice user namE Mr happy asthma.....

I do that with everything I read. Lol well all the fiction anyways. I also fast forward through movies to see where all the surprises might be. I hat surprises. I have to know before i watch. lol

I rarely ever read the end of a story, no matter what genre, I might do if I've read it before, or perhaps if I am reading a book after seeing the movie, but otherwise I do not do it. I don't want to spoil the ending, as it ruins any suspense that might of been written into the story, and I guess it might ruin my interest in it!

No, definitely not. I resist thisd temptation all the time. It destroys the book completely. I always decide I want to enjoy the novel and that means reading the whole thing in proper order, from begining to end. I've heard of lots of people who do this but I think t takes away from all the pleasure of reading a book.

I never read the last pages of any book I read, I will read the back cover though or a bit of the beginning to see if its way to get into. I cant do that as you wouldnt understand who all the characters are and the relations between everyone!!

I love reading books and I read them very fast. I have a lot of patience to read them till the end instead of jumping to the last pages. Moreover I am interested how the story unfolds gradually. I enjoy each and every moment of the story. Its really interesting for me to read the sequence of events because without the sequence of events, the end cannot be appreciated.

hi naseeha, you know, whenever i open a book, i tend to go the last page first, i dont the read the ending as such, but i just always like to read the last one paragraph alone, not more than that, i dont know how and why i had this habit develop in me, but it still persists and there is not much use from it too, by the time i reach the end part, i wud have completeley forgotten what i read earlier...but still i continue to do so

Dear friend, Yes, I would do that as I find little patience to read whole book I just like to know the story in a capsule mode. I may read the back side were the story brief is given and read the end where the mystery ends. May be I lack patience or may be time to read whole that. May be it is so interested one I may take time to read still in between I may skip those felt boring or lagging.

Yes i too read the brief outline given at the back but that is to decide whether i like the outline or not. You only read the last few pages after reading the outline?

i do it a lot! i mean, like i do it every time i read a nice book. i cant wait to finish the whole story, so what i do is take a sneak peek preview of what the story would end. lol. but after reading it, i still continue finishing all the pages. it's still better to read the whole of it so you will know everything that happened to the story.

My sister does that too!! I hate it when she does that, it kind of takes the suspense away and destroys the thrill of the story. I really love to read and I like building up the suspense as I go through the story. But I have to confess, there are some authors that I think are boring and draggy. I'm not really into wordy book that would explain the interior of a room for a whole page! I like the fast-paced easy reading ones and when I read a boring author, I usually take a peek at the end too. LOL! !

Sometimes it gets so exciting, and I just can't wait for the end. So I just 'cheat' and skip to the end pages and read. Once my curiosity satisfied, I'd go back to where I stop, and continue reading.

If ever i read the last pages and understand whats going to happen in the end, i think i would not go back to where i left the story. Cos it no longer would be as interesting...

Nope! I don't do it. It removes the thrill of finishing the book. Even if you read the ending, there are fragments of the story which you won't understand. So better off to read it little by little.

No.. the book would be more worthless for me if I don't read it from its first page up to the last. However, if I haven't read the book I bought for quite a long time and I'm having no time because of busy schedules or work, maybe I'm going to think about passing through to the last few pages.

You would not understand a thing if you just read the last few pages... Instead you could read a few pages from the middle of the book and then if you find it interesting then you can read it little by little....
