Long hair or short? I got mine chopped off today!

I was going to let it grow but the summer is just too much..it was at that awkward stage, too short to tie back but long enough for it to stick to my neck in the heat and get into my eyes. Today I decided to just cut it and maybe grow it out by next summer, if I want.
But I'm 54 now and I'm thinking well, everyone says I look better with short hair so maybe I shouldn't grow it out. I feel more womanly with longer hair but short hair is so nice and my silver shows better that way. Well, I have almost another year to decide!
Do you prefer yours long or short? Do you let a man decide it for you? My ex husband always preferred long hair and it was such a relief-among other things-to whack it all off when he left!

Hi dragon,
I had hair to my waistline last year. My hubby loved it. In fact that was one of my best characteristics just something I liked best about myself. When I got it professionally cut and styled, it was sort of like a bob cut. My hubby asked me to bring my hair home for keepsakes so when I got home he put it in one of our vases and it still sits on our entertainment unit. I asked him why he wanted to keep it and he replied, "Why did you keep your son's hair from his first haircut?" I said to him it was because it was his very first haircut and it's special. He then replied," that's exactly why I wanted to keep yours, because since we've been together, it's your first haircut."
I wanted to donate my hair to the cancer society but he talked me into keeping it.

I'm sorry he didn't want to donate it but the sentiment is very sweet. It sounds as if you have that rare type of man that truly treasures you!

I have my hair short, 0.5 on the sides and 1 on the top, i like my women with long hair sometimes short but not too short.
I wouldn't mind getting my hair braided or cornrowed.

Why do men like women to have long hair? I've never gotten a man to answer that for me.

I dunno i guess seeing the majority of women with long hair all my life that it is programmed in my head all women should have long hair, but i don't mind a woman with short hair if it suites her :P

I was trying very hard to grow my hair long. When I went in to a strange stylist for a trim because my bangs were too long and I couldn't see, she had other ideas. She whacked off two inches and now I have a chin-length bob for the summer. I am going to take all my vitamins and eat good stuff to encourage it to grow back faster. I fear that nothing but time will correct this misdeed perpetrated upon my head.
I always had short hair growing up. I have very thick tangly hair and my mom didn't want to deal with it. She made me keep either a pixie or a lady di type cut until I left for college. I have been trying my best to get it growing since then with many mishaps in between.
I have chubby cheeks and need longer hair to not look like a chipmunk.

You poor thing! I know how you feel, last time I got it cut the girl scalped me, practically, and I felt awful. I thought it was mannish and my cowlick stuck up for weeks!

Thank you for best response!
I ended up going to my regular stylist to see if she could fix it. She trimmed up the front and readded the layers so that it doesn't look so bad. She said I should be glad that I couldn't see the back since the girl went razor happy back there. It will take months for the damage to grow enough to fix fully.

I once had waist length hair. Then I went to should length.......when I left my first husband. He didn't much like it, but it wasn't his decision. I do think that many women keep it long for a man. Then I cut it shorter. Then I let it grow out and went to a male beautician and asked him how he thought I should have it. He cut it and left it longer. That lasted a couple of years before I cut it short. I LOVE IT. It really is the best thing for me since I can't do much with hair and I was just told that I can use wax in it and it does help when I get to the time when I should go to get it cut and don't!! I get many comments on it when it is short and my oldest sister just realized, after 53 years, that I have curly hair!!

I stay wth long hair for a few days. I don't like short hair especially in summer, because if I can tie it, it will be very hot. So I keep my long hair, I tie it in the summer. and just let it down to my shoudle in winter, spring, autumn. I like long hair, when I 'm youne, I always with very short hair, because not time to care it. Then now, I have time for my hair now.

Long hair can be a lot of fun! They make such pretty, shiny ornaments for it and you can put it in so many different styles! Yes, I love long hair but I'm getting to the point where things are tiring and I'll try growing it once more--if it proves too much for me, I guess I'll keep it short. But I do love to have long hair.

Hi Dragon,
This has to be one of the longest running issues for women.
I know where you are coming from. I'm sure that there are very few men who don't care whether their wife, spouse, girlfriend or who ever, has long or short hair. If given the choice, most men would never want us to cut our hair. I came to the conclusion a long time ago, that I'm the one that has to be happy, long or short. I like my hair short because then I can let it grow a little or a lot, or just chop it off when I need a change. I'm 58 and kind of feel that short is most age appropriate for me. Besides, I don't think it makes me look younger or older, just better. All I know is short makes my life way easier. If people tell you that you look good in short hair, go with it and enjoy it.

You're right, it does make me look better. I don't care about younger--I'm 54 and don't mind if I look it although people say I don't. Who cares? I'm proud I've made it this far! I don't understand why men love the long hair...they rarely stroke it or brush it for us or appreciate it in any tanglible way. They certainly are a mystery.

Hi dragon, I enjoy a lot of years having short and stylish hair...LOL! and now I wanted to have it long as long as I can take for a change and for experience..My husband loves long hair too and it was just a coincidence that I also decided to try having long hair but I don't like anyone deciding for what I want..I love suggestions though but not to the point that they will decide for meLOL!

I had long blond hair at one time and was very proud of my mane. I thought I looked very sexy, however, as I aged, the long blond hair began making me look older and harder looking.
Now I wear my hair in a short bob and have gone back to my natural brunette color. Many people have told me that it makes me look younger. At 53 I know I won't ever look like thirty something, but if my hair can shave a few years off my face, just by cutting it and coloring it, then I'll take it. It's cheaper than a facelift, that's for sure.

I'm letting mine be natural. I'm lucky in that I don't get grey so much as silver and it's salt and pepper right now. I like that look. And I think the shorter hair makes me look better--but I miss my long hair. I have all winter to think about it!

Yes, it makes me feel girly and that's why I like it. Short hair makes me feel efficient--hardly a rewarding feeling!

I have reasonably long hair. I have been growing out for nearly 2 years now. It used to be above my shoulders, whereas now it is resting on the top of my boobs. I am hoping for it to grow another four inches so it is below my boobs, but it will probably take another year maybe longer to get it that length.

When I was young I never had long hair. Now that I'm in my late 40s I've been growing it out. I figure one last chance before I'm too old to do it. LOL I've been letting it grow for about three years now and its down around my shoulders. Why in the world I'm doing this when I live in a hot hot climate I'm not sure. My mom told me she loved my hair and thought it was so pretty long. I lost her to cancer last year and guess I'm still honoring her opinion. But I tell you, its thick, its curly and its always pinned up in a clip. And since I always wear it up I'm not real sure why I keep it long. Today after washing it I couldn't even get the tangles out of it. I finally gave up and just cliped it up again.LOL I may have to give up and cut it short again one day.

That was the way with me when my hair was long, I kept it tied up and back because I hated it falling in my face, my food, getting in the way when I cooked...when my kids were babies they'd chew on it! I didn't mind that but the rest of it getting in the way just drove me nuts, and it was a pretty short drive.

This is all up to my hubby. If it were up to me then I would cut my hair short. He likes long hair, but most men do so I can't fault him for that. Even most of my guy friends tell me to keep my hair as long as possible. I prefer my hair to be short in the summer because it is hot and long in the winter for the cold. But, this isn't a perfect life so I'm not sure what I'll do. I like long hair when I go out at night so I guess I won't be cutting my hair anytime soon.

I kept mine long for my husband, too. Never again. If a man doesn't like me for me, the hell with him. I'm not planning to have any type of relationship again, anyway.

Mid-length, perhaps to the shoulders, is a good length for most people. You can tie it back, pin it up or wear it down. That would be my ideal length, and it will probably be that long with spring comes.

I don't understand why men like it so long. I figured when my husband left, I'd do what made me comfortable. After all, I'm the one that has to wear it and care for it!

I have long hair because I find it nice and easy to care for. It doesn't require trimming as often as short hair does, and when it's out of control I can just tie it up!
On days like this when it's hot though, I could quite happily have it all cut off and avoid those sweaty tendrils sticking around my face!

That's what bothered me so much this weekend so Monday I just whacked it. It's awful to be hot and sweaty, even worse to have that hair sticking to the face and neck!

Hi! hope you enjoy new look in your new hairstyle :)
My husband doesn't want my hair to be cut off, he loves my long black hair.
Back when I'm still single I'm very comfortable in short hair, and a lot of my friend saying i look better with short hair too.
But now, Im enjoying having a long hair, it cost much for hair maintenance but worthy't cause I love it!
Thanks and have good day ahead...

When I was growing up, I was raised that a woman shouldn't cut her hair. It was my dad's belief anyway. I had thick naturally curly hair and it was horrible. I was tender headed and that didn't help matters either. When I was about 13, I convinced my mom to cut it for me. My dad wasn't pleased, but man, it was so much easier to take care of and believe it or not, hair has alot of weight to it so when you cut it, it is not as hard on your neck, or that is how it was in my case. I cut my hair in Nov 2005 and I had decided that I wanted it to grow long, but like you, it got to be too hot to handle again, so about a month ago, I chopped it off and I think it looks better and feels better. But honestly, I don't care if other people think that it looks good on me. If I like it, then that's all that matters.

Good for you! You have to do what keeps you comfortable. In my day, a woman was supposed to cut her hair when she reached 30. I remember my sister in law had long, beautiful black hair and I was shocked and disappointed when she cut it at 30 years old.
