why people need a friend

I found people say often they are looking for a true friend.
What is that means ? why people want a friend ?
After thinking lot and lot i found people may have some needs that are listed below:
a) For emotional Support,
b) For physical support,
c) Both above,
d) Some other reasons.
these may be the most possible answers in this matter.But as it is my own thinking,i am not sure what people think about this !!
Let me know how much i am right in this conclusion.

Friend could mean both of a) and b). You are with a friend because
you need someone to be with.
No man is an island.
People needs people. But not just people. They someone who they
can trust and who will trust them. Someone who will help them and
in turn they can help. Someone to spend good moments with and
someone to be there when you need some support. Live would be
lonely without a friend.

well it is right that friends are to be trust,
but the idea make me confuse that is "why only friend"
one can share feeling with wife/husband,lover,family members.then why we just waste time to find a friend that we can trust most !!
