Who will be the Dr's new assistant? (WARNING, spoilers if you're not in the UK)

So now that Catherine Tate's Donna has gone back to her old life with no memory of the Doctor or space adventure, I'm intrigued about who will be his next sidekick, and I'd really like to know NOW please!! Rose has got her happy ending (kind of..), Martha's much too high-powered now, and Kylie's character met an unfortunate end, so I think they're all pretty much ruled out. Will it be Sarah Jane Smith, or maybe another former assistant from yester-year? (I'm not familiar with many others, but hope it's not Bonnie Langford, lol! On the other hand, maybe it is inevitable that she'll appear in a future episode; so many famous people have made an appearance after all). Will it perhaps be Sally Sparrow, who was a popular character from a past episode, and clearly assistant-material? Before Freema Agyeman's character was revealed, there was speculation that it might be Lily Allen! Could she be in the running again? Or will it be a total unknown? Could it possibly be a man??? I think it would be interesting if the Doctor's daughter returned to help him out. We've done the Dr/assistant potential love situation now, so how about seeing the Dr/daughter relationship, which they didn't explore too much in the episode where she was 'born'. We know that he must discover some time that she's still alive, so why not make her a regular character - and an assistant? Who do you think it will be? Who would you like to see in the assistant role?

I think I would like to see the Doctor's daughter as his assistant. That would be good and Georgia Moffat who plays her is a brilliant actress so that wold be fantastic. My other half would like to see Donna's dad as the assistant because he thinks he would be funny. However, there have been one or two subtle indications that Donna hasn't gone for good which perhaps only a few people would have noticed. It would be nice to see a newcomer but it would also be nice to see an older person. Maybe Mickey, he is all lonely now. He was the only one who didn't have anyone or anywhere to go to so it could make sense for him to pop back in again.

I don't think Georgia Moffat and Stephen Moffat are related. In fact I think their surnames are spelt slightly differently, I just don't know which is which! I know she is the daughter of an old Dr Who actor. I think that is Peter Davison but I may be wrong. The subtle signs. Well, I didn't actually notice them. My other half noticed that there was a bit of a subtle thing with Donna's ring as if the Time Lord power had gone through that into her and that ring flashed later on after the Doctor had wiped Donna's memory I think. There was also the whole converging time lines thing. I got the feeling that that wasn't just to do with the Daleks destruction of reality thing. I reckon there is more to it.

Yes, I think his daughter would make a good assistant too. Is Georgia Moffat related to Stephen Moffat (new chief writer of Dr Who)? Maybe it's just a coincidence with the name. I love the idea of Donna's granddad being the assistant, that would indeed be funny! He's such a nice character. I get the impression that Donna might be back, from Jaytech's answer (see above). But I must say that I completely missed any subtle indications that were in the programme. I'd be interested to know what they were if you'd be willing to share them. Yes, Martha worked really well as a newcomer, but maybe an older character would know too much - you know with new assistants there's always the initial shock of the tardis and the disbelief at what's happening to them - well you wouldn't get that with someone who's seen it all before. Although maybe that's a good thing. We have seen a lot of 'new' people go through this in the last few series, and maybe it would be quite refreshing to see someone who knows what's going on for a change... Mickey? Maybe. I wonder if they will let the doctor have a male assistant?!

I knew I'd forgotten something. I think a male assistant would be interesting. There have been male assistants in the old Doctor Who series'. As has been said, he's done the whole love story thing. A different kind of relationship would be refreshing.

Well I'm in Cardiff where a lot of Dr Who is filmed & they recently filmed parts for a Christmas special right outside our home, they even used my mums shed for an electric supply for this huge light on a crane in the street. Anyhow, to cut a long story short one of my neighbors said they saw Catherine Tate in the pub across the road where the filming was taking place.

Oh that's really exciting for you and your family! It's good to know that Catherine Tate is in it again, I quite liked her, even though lots of people didn't. I suppose we don't know if she'll be an assistant or just make an appearance, but it'll be nice to have a familiar face there. Thanks a lot for telling us :0)

I'm in the US and just saw the season finally last night, It was incrediable. I think the one before it was a bit better but all in all a great show. You mention someone name Kylie and that she met an unfortunate end, who was that? I don't recall the name right off. I was a little disapointed though that it didn't end the way the past few ones ended...What???? I was waiting for that and he never said it. I wonder if that means something. I think he might go solo for a while but not for long. I don't think it will be someone from the past, probably a whole new person or thing even. I still can't wait for the new ones to start here but it will be some time.

The line I was talking about was at the end of the season. When Donna transported to the TARDIS he said what and thenshe said it and then he said back and forth. He also did the same routine when the Titanic crashed into him. I thought maybe that was going to be the signature line at the season finalies.

The Kylie I was referring to was Kylie Minogue (the Australian singer - and soap queen!) She starred in last year's Christmas special as a temporary Dr's assistant. It was the episode that was set on the Titanic. Here's a cheesy take on it from one of our tabloids: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/article599429.ece Notice the speculation further down the page on the RHS (in "Related Stories"), that Jennifer Saunders may play the next Dr, albeit temporarily! My memory's fading now as to what exactly happened in the last episode, but what were you waiting for him to say?

One of the women i instantly thought it might be is " gwen cooper " i know she's in touchwood but when the dr saw her he was impressed and seeing as they don't run both shows at the same time they could very easily transfer her over to dr who and then back to torchwood, they did with martha. I don't really have any idea who it oculd be but i am sure something will leak somewhere eventually and it'll be someone we never thought of.

You know, I never even thought of Gwen Cooper; she never even made my possible assistant list! Of course she'll be very well-qualified, and you never know! Yes, you're right, I'm sure we'll get some clues at least before Christmas... Thanks a lot for your answer!

Thinking more about it i would love gwen to be the dr's assistant because for me the more she is on the better, i don't know what it is about her but she just has this huge sexiness about her. I am looking forward to the christmas one especially with it being the return of the cybermen, i like the fact that the writers are bringing back the old villains and i think this is a great thing for the program because it's what we all love though it would be nice if they could come up with some really nasty villain who is worse than the cybermen and more terrifying than the daleks but who is not some poncy bloke in a wobbly suit this i would love to see. Ah well we can but wait to see who might be the next assistant if only it wasn't so flippin long. When is torchwood back on? any ideas?

Lol about Gwen Cooper's sexiness! I hope that she's on more for your sake. Yes, it would be nice if they introduced a new super-villain, I think them keeping on bringing back daleks and then cybermen and then daleks again is getting a bit old. I agree, they shouldn't be wobbly though! Yes, Christmas is ages to wait. I've heard that there's then not another series for a year after that. Is that right? No idea about Torchwood I'm afraid. I stopped watching that after the first series. It was quite enjoyable, but I just had too many things to watch. I'll let you know if I hear anything. Thanks for replying.
