After the money is put into your paypal account you can either request a check or have the money direct deposited into your checking account. There is a fee of $1.50 USD for check withdrawals but free withdrawals for direct deposit to your checking account.

I have my PayPal linked to my bank account. I've been a member since 2001 and have never had a problem with PayPal. You can simply transfer the money from your PayPal account to your bank account (or vice versa if you choose to do so). To set it up, you add your bank account information (all the info you need should be on one of your checks), and then PayPal verifies your account by sending you two small deposits. You can check your statement or online banking a couple days later to see the amounts of these deposits. This is their way of making sure it is YOUR account, as a safeguard. I am not sure if they will send you a check for your funds since I have never done it that way, but you should be able to find much more info by reading their FAQs or submitting a support ticket.

if you just sold an item on ebay your customer can pay you by paypal or any other method your allowing. If they pay by paypal then your options of getting the money out is 1) link it to your bank account and then just transfer the money to your bank account. 2) Get a paypal debit card this has a MC or Visa Logo on it and just spend the money. 3) you can also request a check and they will send you the money.
