i often travel to different places, meeting different people with different cultures and beliefs. i am good in communicating/talking but i find myself weak in starting conversations with strangers because i fear of opening up topics that may be offensive or not interesting to them.
how would you normally start a conversation with someone whom you're not friends with?

What I usually do is when I find someone and wanna start a conversation or just small talk, I'd most likely start with the place where we were in. Ask a few and try to catch his interest about the place, if there is. As much as I can, I try to ask leading questions and when I get his/her attention, then I'd slip in my introduction (name, etc).
It does happen though that people won't be as responsive as you'd expected and some would be overly responsive than usual. Nevertheless, just try to be yourself and be honest with the interest.
