What would you do if you could be debt free?

I'd like this to be a serious question, so please think about it. If you didn't have any debt at all, no car loan(s), mortgage payment, credit card or student loan debt, how would you spend your time or your money? I'm sure most of us would travel, some of us might help set up a younger relative for college. The possibilities are exciting aren't they? Also, are you doing anything to become debt free? Please share.

I would love to travel. I just would not have any stress. It would be nice. Yes we are currently trying to pay off bills right now and not creating any new ones.

Make sure I do not get back into debt. I am one of the lucky one to be debt free, well except my mortgage. How I did it was to save and buy out right. I have never financed a car, I always save up for the next one. Instead of monthly payment, I just put what would be going to the bank in the form of a payment, into my savings account. Then when I need a new car I just take what I need out and buy it out right. Never put anything on a credit card. Nothing is needed now if you cannot afforded it. Yes my life stlye is pretty simple and for some they could not live the way I do, but I do not mind. No I and my husband do not go on vaction trip, or other things that people do all the time. The luxary is we live in a city that has a college. We have season ticket to football and basketball. Those season ticket are not that expensive and there is no parking fees, like if we went to a pro game.

Good for you. Those are smart ways to save and spend money. I guess after you pay off the note for your house you'll be debt free, way to go. I hope you are teaching others your methods. People sometimes have to learn the hard way.

If I didn't have to worry about money to pay the bills, I would enjoy my free time by writing a novel. I've got several ideas. Also I woudl write a children's book for my daughter. I'll eventually write the children's book for sure. I wouldn't mind visiting every state in the U.S. either-- I'd love to do a months-long road trip with my family.

My husband and I really only have two debts... our house and his truck. My SUV is paid for and I own another house that is totally paid for which I will be putting on the market to sell soon. The money from that should pay off our mortgage on this house. My husband can then pay off his truck within a year. We will be debt-free!!!
I do want to travel some before I'm too old or too sick to do it! But, mainly, I think I'd keep working on my hobbies and selling them. I don't do it for the money; I do it because I like it! I have friends and family whom I could help with the money I make if I don't need it for things like electricity, gas, food, etc., and I doubt I ever will because my husband will never stop working (he adores his work) and he makes more than enough for us to live on.

Oh wow, to be debt free, I would finally be able to sleep at night.
I would be able to go places that I have only dreamed of.
I wouldn't have to ask first "how much something cost" before I decided to buy it.
I would be able to give more to my church.
I would be able to have my cats professionally groomed.
I am trying to pay off bills, but it is hard, when there is not enough income coming in.
Now I am unemployed and my husband is unemployed, so it is tough.
Hopefully we will get on our feet soon, and can start attacking these bills.

To be debt free, you could be. Give more to your church now. I hope that you and your hubby find employment that allows you to gain confidence in yourselves.

This is such a wonderful discussion. I love everyone's ideas and progress.
If I could be debt free, I'd save up to buy the house I currently rent and then I would renovate it as much as I could myself. I love this house so much. After that I would work on the backyard. There are so many plants back there natively that ppl pay big money to put in their yard. They grow wild here. I would spend more time in my backyard repositioning those beautiful plants to look more like a sculptured garden. *sigh* That is such a beautiful dream. For now though I pay a lot of bills and cringe when less important ones must get paid late.

Beautiful property. Just keep doing what you're doing, it will happen. Then you can *sigh* over a picture perfect landscape. I'll wait for the magazine cover. :)

I would definitely travel, and volunteer more. All we are doing at this point is trying to stay employed, but I lost a job this year, hubby lost one last week. One step that we have been taking that is for health's sake, but also is for wealth's sake is to challenge ourselves to quit eating out. I am hoping that the result will be a slimmer me. I think I cn already see it in my wallet. Now I am required one night a week to take my handicapped adult clients out to eat, but that is reimbursed, up to a certain point.

Uhhh, fact of the matter is, I am debt free. Seriously. But, in my case it did take a "lifetime" of hard work and planning to get there. Now I am enjoying the fruits of that labor, and looking forward to staying healthy and prudent in order to make the pleasure last as long, long time.

If we were debt free, more of the money we earn would go to 2 different places. 1st a larger chunk would go to my daughters college fund.I would want her to have the best start possible. Second we would pad our retirement fund.

You can do both you know. It would be a great gift to your daughter, imagine your grandchildren debt free. I know they say that children are born into debt but I say they are free, we just have to make sure of that.

Over the past couple of years we have worked hard to become debt free, we no longer have any credit cards, loans or anything on hire purchase. We have also just cleared our catalogue off, now the only debt we have is our mortgage and we only owe half on that now. So now most of the debts have gone, the spare money is being put away and from next year I will HOPEFULLY be going abroad for my holidays, and that is only because we have had two washout summers in UK.

I am paying off my debts little by little - every few months or so though I add it all up so I can see that it's going down as sometimes I get so low becuase I don't often have spare cash!
I would definitely travel as I work in travel and I love the exotic destinantions and wish I could spend half as much as some of the clients do! I would love to just do my home up and then be able to spend more time with my husband and our dogs in our garden and enjoy a more relaxed life! x

If I was debt free I would love to do my job forever...I get to help people who really need it and appreciate it, even though they cannot tell me so. I would travel to Ireland and save for retirement. I would spend more time with my family and actually be able to get out more so I can meet a person to start a family with LOL.
For the past seven years i have been tackling my debt I got while in college. And I am almost to the point where I can remember to breathe. I still have a ways to go, but I joined a consolidation place for my credit cards (and they do work) and I consolidated my student loans and locked in at a very low rate about 7 yrs ago. I am lucky my interest rate is only arond 4%.
It's a nice thought isn't it....debt free....kinda laughable in today's terms.

In a a few more years my fiance and me will be just about debt free , and that will be a dream come true . We both are working our bums off for this to come sooner . I suppose I would love to travel more and make repairs to this house . Maybe , start a family too . I think the best thing will be to have a piece of mind finally .

I am debt free and still can't make it. Things are so high in California and wages never increase (in the private sector) when the cost of living increases. Out of the 20 years and several companies I have worked I got a raise once and that was only cause I cried to get it...literally cried after having been turned down for 3 years in a row. No, living debt free doesn't mean you will make ends meet.

Of course it would. But my point is that just cause you have no debt doesn't mean you have money to spend on luxuries like so many of the "get out of debt and be happy" people preach. Being debt free doesn't mean you can do all kinds of fun things. Didn't mean to be so down, and as true as it is, I guess I should have just kept my mouth shut and not brought everyone else down!

Interesting point. But I must ask, wouldn't it be harder to make ends meet if you had a ton of debt?

i am 23 years old. i was in debt for the past five years. as of may 23rd, i finally made my last credit card payment of over $500. I no longer have any credit cards, no car loan(paid off), no school loan, no debt - just regular bills. I was in debt probably over $10,000. It took me working 2 jobs a day and 5 years and i still feel like i'm not financially free. my credit still has to take time to be repaired, and if i were to get a newer car, i'd have a car loan again.. it just seems that with the economy being so defaulted, i have to have 3 or 4 jobs just to live a lifestyle of happiness. how do those kids on those MTV shows like "The Hills" live like that? THEY DON'T WORK! Ugh. Lotto doesn't work either. :::sigh:::

TV isn't reality, the fact that you worked to pay off your debts shows a great attribute. I applaud you, well, let me take my fingers off the keys first. There, I hope you know that you did something incredible.

im debt free and well the only thing i owe on is my house (which i dont consider debt like you would like credit cards etc) and we like to eat out more and travel.. right now things are all shifting to where we are trying to figure out what we want our money to go to since our budget will be changing soon but we mostly just spend it on entertainment since we are so used to being poor and not being able to do anything so now when we can we will go do something

We're debt free - I'm 50 and my husband is 55, so we've long paid off our mortgage and now only need to run one car which is eight years old. Our three daughters have left home and don't need any financial assistance, but we have our 21yo son at home doing an apprenticeship and still needing our financial support for TAFE fees, food and board. We're thinking about retirement, so any spare money goes into savings - but as the house is nearly 30 years old and we've brought up four children in it, there are expensive repairs to be undertaken before we sell. Also, we'll be moving to a much more expensive area, so anything we can put aside will be very handy!

I hope so - but property prices in the area we now live are very low at the moment, and they are very high in the city we'd like to move to. Plus, our son is costing us a fortune in fines and car repairs ... so we'll just have to see how we go. The thought of retirement is actually a bit scary.

I would love to travel and would also love to do some kind of charity work and help others one day.
Me and my husband are trying to pay off our debts. He is paying our two loans and I'm paying the credit cards and I'm not spending on them anymore. I just paid one of them off actually so I'm really chuffed!
What would you do?? You haven't really told us. :)

I haven't, thanks for asking too. Well, we will be debt free in a couple of years. We don't have a mortgage because we travel for my wife's job, she's a travel nurse. We have credit card debt from owning a big useless house so that's being paid down and we have student loans from college educations. We have a car payment too. My goal is to make a car payment every week my wife gets paid, so that should allow us to pay off a 5 year loan in 1.2 years. Our family has been called to mission work with our church so going into that field and being debt free is a good qualification. Most people mention travel, we do that already, and that's a dream of ours anyway. We plan to travel to foreign lands for missions. Also, we support a bible camp with our tithe. Glad you paid off a cc, hope you are able to travel one day soon, keep up the great work.

I will do business. Be an entrepreneur. Make a living. Amass wealth. Build a house for my parents. Build my own energy-efficient and environmental-friendly house.
Spend for charity. Organize parties for the less-fortunate people. Protect the innocent. :-p
