I'm afraid I don't understand the question. What do you mean by "splitting"? You mean like breaking boards (splitting them in two) or do you mean spreading your legs out to go into the splits (possibly as a streatching exercise) or is there some other meaning that I'm not comprehending right now?

Well, that would be part of stretching. In stretching you are generally trying to increase flexibility and lower the risk of injury or stiffness after you're finished exercising. Depending on how you stretch you will be stretching different muscles.

Splitting is one way of stretching your muscles to train your body to spread them wide so it is easier for you to use your legs for kicking high places or things. This are usually train for martial arts that involves legs like tae kwon do, kick boxing, karate.. etc.

You need to stretch properly before any kind of exercise but in martial arts I suppose it's important to practice doing the splits so that you can execute high kicks without tearing your leg muscles

Basically that would be for stretching and warming up. Especially if you are into the kicking arts like Muay Thai and Tae Kwon Do, for you to be able to deliver a high kick, you should be very flexible. This also promotes health since you are letting the blood flow in your body.
