Do you use a bookmark?

When reading, everyone has to set their book down every once in a while. I'm curious what people besides myself use to mark their place in the book when that happens. Do you have bookmarks? Or do you just pick up a random piece of paper to do the job? Or are do you have a memory of steel and are able to just remember your place? I have used all three methods myself, but I usually end up using a bookmark or remembering my place. I only occasionally use a stray piece of paper or a pen or something.

I have tried most of the methods you've used as well, exxodus. I've used random papers, an actual bookmark and tried to remember pages. I use whatever method is at my convenience. I do have many actual bookmarks, but I don't regularly use them for a reason. Because I may be reading more than one book at one time and if my bookmark is used in one book, I don't want to hunt for one to use in another. If I'm too lazy, I will just try to remember the page number/chapter that I left off at. If I just need to put my book down for a few minutes, I'll just lay the book down open to the page I'm not, but I'm careful not to bend the spine too much. And I'm ashamed to admit to all the booklovers out there, even though I am one myself, that I occasionally dog-ear (fold down) the page I'm currently on. I generally only do this to library books though because I hate to do that to my own books and definitely do not do it to books that I borrow from friends.

I'm glad to see and also ashamed to admit that once inawhile I dog-ear books as well. That is only as a last resort. I have bookmarks, but never know where they are, so usually any piece of paper lying around gets shoved in to save the page. Or sometimes I just leave the book open to the page I'm on. Of course if the book has a cover, I use that to mark the page I'm on. It looks like most of us do the same thing! Hooray for book lovers!

why is it that people have a hiss fit when someone does this? I had no problems bending it back and keeping it straight O.o

hi exxodus! i usually use a bookmark when i'm reading especially if its a thick book. before, i never really use nice bookmarks and i would use a piece of paper or anything that i can insert within the pages of a book even if its a scissor or something bulky. ^__^;; but since i bought some nice bookmarks, i now always use a bookmark when i'm reading something.

I don't bother with a book mark when I put my book down. I just fold the top corner of the page. That way I know exactly where I left off. When I used to use a book mark I never knew if I read the first page and ended up reading it again. So when I fold the page I know exactly which page to start reading again. ALso, I found that my book mark would fall out sometimes and then I would have to read a bunch of pages to find out where I left off.

I have tons of bookmarks being I sub at a Library but do you suppose I use them?? Not very often. I know I should so that I don't damage the book but often times the bookmarks aren't there when I need them. At night when I read in bed I will put my reading glasses in the spot where I leave off. Probably not good for the glasses either. Otherwise I just try to remember what page number I am on.

I have lotsa postcards. I find postcards relatively good as bookmarks. Those are what I use to mark my page when I need to put down the book. I love books too much to impose dog ears on them!!

I tend to use a bookmark since I read so fast, while I won't recall the exact page number I do know exactly where in the book I last stopped readin especially if I had to put the book down suddenly. Most times I try to finish a chapter before closing the book for further reading

Over the years, I've collected many nice bookmarks. So, I try to use them. Right now, I'm using one that says something about being sisters. One of my sisters bought it for me. Anyhoo, I do use scraps of paper occasionally when I don't have a bookmark nearby. I couldn't remember the page number I was on to save my soul at this point in my life.

I use just about anything that I can possibly find for a bookmark. There was a time when I could rely on my memory to maintain my place in a book, but not anymore. Sometimes, I actually remember to grab a few of the free bookmarks from the library when I'm there checking out books. If I forget, then I will use any piece of paper, receipt, cardboard or ribbon that I can find. I once tried to use a pen, but I didn't like that it folded the cover of the book.

I always use aa bookmark whenever I am reading a book or else I will have a tough time finding my page back. I have a very peculiar habit about my book marks. though I have 4 or 5 book marks but I always prefer to use a particular one for all my books. This is because i presume that if I will use any other bookmark then I won't be able to finish up that book. Silly I know, but I ma still trying to let go off this habit.

I just fold the page where I stop, as simple as that

No, my bookmark is my friends. I tell them to remember the number that I will give then ask them again if I continue reading my book. I tend to lose my bookmark because after I used them, I just set it aside somewhere and misplaced.

I normally just use a piece of scrap paper that is near by. Whish I could remember what page I left off from because that would mean am not getting old. lol I use to be able to remember. I know I do have friends that like to fold the corner down a little bit so when I lend them books I make sure I tell them more than once use a piece of paper to mark where you leave off do NOT fold the pages down. lol I will sometimes toss in a piece of paper or even a bookmark in the book so they have it handy. When I travel and there is a chance the paper or bookmark will fall out I use a post it note so it doesn't fall out.

I grab any close available piece of paper usually. If its a hardcover, I just flip over the dust jacket flap into my place. I like bookmarks and if I had one, I would definitely use it. I can't use the memory method cuz my memory isn't so great! LOL

Hi. I prefer to use "cute" little bookmarks. But if I am somewhere other than home, and lose my "cute" little bookmark, I have been known to use the stray piece of paper , or pen, or worst yet, the dreaded dogearring. (You know that bad habit of folding down the edge of a page to mark your place. I only do this when it is absolutely necessary. I find that it is almost destruction of the book and very unsightly. I guess you can tell that I have a high regard for books. The remembering my place method has never really worked for me, I guess it's because I read so many books.

I have an old credit card that I use as a bookmark in the book I am reading downstairs and then in the book that I read when I am upstairs I have a nappy bag that marks my page. I must point out that the nappy bag has never been used!

I usually try to remember my page number. If I can't do that I will just remember the storyline and find my place. I don't ever really use bookmarks. I think that is because it seems so abrupt. by remembering to find my spot I can make sure that I still remember exactly what is going on, (I sometimes put books down for a LONG time). It just makes me feel a little more engaged.

When I read I normally stop on a certain chapter, so it's easier to remember. But if I'm on a random page, then I would have to use a bookmark. Haha. Bookmarks aren't exactly my favorite thing to use though cause sometimes they drop out, and that's no help at all. Haha.
