Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English they'll learn English you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. What just a minute Obama do you speak spanish oh wait you do not. While I have no doubt that his supporters will spin that statement in ever more creative ways, the bottom line (in our universe) is that Barack Obama is calling for a bilingual English-Spanish U.S.
Then the jerk dicided to make fun of Americans by saying "It's embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is 'Merci beaucoup.'"

Red, it should be 'la bouche' not 'le bouche'. I'm glad you speak some French, although you don't know how to differentiate between the feminine and masculine parts of the definite article. I wish all American children can learn a second language and do better than what you just did with the French Language.

He should be embarrassed. He is finds it to be so important that we know a few languages and he thinks we have 57 states! lol He doesn't even know what language Afghanis speak. He is not an authority on anything. He just throws out thoughts and ideas and does not even know if they are true. So he is going to make fun of Americans who speak one language? Who is he to tell us it should be Spanish? Maybe it should be French. Maybe it should be Arabic. I think there are so many of our own people who still need to get English right and he wants to have them learn Spanish? If the people in our country elect him, far to many Americans have dummied up!

The conservatives in American politics are so shameless in their hypocrisy you wonder whether they are truly as religious as they claim to be. In life, everybody has a weakness and everybody has a strong point. It is only civil and polite, when you speak of someone you are competing with, to admit that they are deserving of being in the contest. If Obama's Harvard degrees were won on a silver platter, as these conservatives would like us to believe(for I have seen many postings here that are no better than a fifth grader's paper in which Obama's intellect has been questioned)then why don't everybody roll over and lose no sleep since McCain would trounce him in November? I have always said that both McCain and Obama are qualified for the job. The problem is with the issues that they stand for. Depending on where you stand on the issues, you would rather like to see one, and not the other, in the White House. Yet, you see these conservatives, who claim to be Christian mind you, calling Obama names. Didn't the Bible say that people should pray for their leaders and those who aspire to leadership? Since when did it become a crime for anybody to stand for President of any country in the world? I thought this philosophy of 'killing the children before they grow' or in this case, 'bringing down the leader before he's even elected' belonged way back in the kingdom of Herod. Who am I even talking to? These High school drop outs pretending to be intellectuals would not even read this. For them, the mantra is 'pull him down' as long as he is not a conservative or does not belong to the Republican Party. These are the same people who claim they are patriots but they are 'so proud' of their country that they will reserve no derogatory term in describing someone who is fit to be president. I'm waiting to see if they would move to Canada if Obama is elected.

I am all for English being declared the official language of the US.
Think of the money that would be saved if all documentation was printed in English instead of two or three other languages as well.
If Obama loves Europe so much, he should go there.... immediately.

"I am all for English being declared the official language of the US."
Some nerve--people came from Britain, basically killing off the indigenous people and imposing their language on the land, but now when a good chunk of the immigrants speak Spanish, there are Americans throwing a temper tantrum because they don't want their country to be bilingual? Are you kidding me? You liked it just fine when it was YOUR guys doing it. Suck it up--what goes around comes around.
"If Obama loves Europe so much, he should go there.... immediately."
Pathetically immature.

Actually, I remember going to school in southern California back in the 80's and you were required to take a foreign language to graduate. Granted, in certain areas of the country, we have more non-english or limited-english speaking people. There are some areas more concentrated than others. Learning a second language is a great tool. Some companies place high value on employees who are bi-lingual.
I'm not sure how prevalent it is now, but it used to be that you were required to take at least one foreign language in high school. That was the policy back when I was a kid. It's not to say that everyone will become fluent in it, but it is a good thing to know.

I totally disagree with you about learning a second language. In fact, learning a second language actually helps children read and write their own language more effectively. I have worked with children for many years and eventually all children need to take language in school. It is mandatory and it is certainly mandatory in college. The more languages a person can learn, the more they can compete in a very global economy. This does not negate the fact that Hispanic immigrants should make every effort to learn to speak English as well. It is totally to their benefit.

We speak English here. That's the way it is. Don't let anyone in for more than a vacation unless they can pass a simple English test.
On top of it, more Obama hypocrisy. Fact is, no one knows what he really thinks, because he'll say anything to get the vote.

I can't stand Hillary, and was rooting for Obama throughout the primaries. I don't hate him like you seem to hate John McCain, I just don't think he'd do as well as president.
And don't deny that a man who can't speak Spanish making fun of people that can't speak Spanish is just more of the pot calling the kettle black, no pun intended. Not a good sign from a presidential candidate.

Hello Gewcew,
Wow! Is Sen. Obama out of touch, or what? Before we begin hounding our citizens to learn a second language, hadn't we ought to focus on our first language???
Nevermind "ebonics", slang, and now texting -- our youth need to focus on proficiency of the English language first.
Below is a link to the U.S. national S.A.T. average scores from 1972 through 2007. The perfect SAT score in each categories is 800. In 1972 the average verbal score was 530. In 2005 that average had fallen to 508.
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0883611.html
It would seem that Sen. Obama is inclined to try to impress our brethren across the pond. Though, instead of holding that as a priority -- perhaps we ought to work on our national high school 'drop-out' rate first, eh?
"In high school completion rates, the United States has now slipped to 10th place in the world."
http://www.focusas.com/Dropouts.html
This is simply one more example of a politician who is way out of touch!

In all honesty we are one of the few countries that do not have an overall grasp of multiple languages. When people from other countries come here they settle all with in a very small location and group together keeping to themselves.
They only deal with each other and do not branch out very far so they have no need to learn English and we have no need to learn their language. The only language they learn is the language of money. We have been happy with this set up since immigration really started with countries like China, Japan and other Asian countries so it was never an issue.
Now that the people from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries are coming in droves, mostly illegally and bypassing the routes others took which gave them at least basic American English, and are mixing with everyone on a very large scale and it is causing a lot of problems and dangerous situations for everyone. (boy that was a long sentence LOL)
For some reason these are the only ones who do not seem to care to figure it out.
Where I live there is a stretch of road, less than a quarter of a mile long, that nearly 50 people have been killed. One or maybe two were killed by my sister-in-laws boyfriend because they do not understand the rules of the road, literally. For some reason they haven't figured out that if a car is going at 60mph and you walk in front of it you are going to get hit (duh).
So the city is scrambling to figure out how to get these people to understand that the button on the pole controls the lights and gives you a safe time and place to cross the street, by putting signs up there in Spanish so they can read them.

Your sister-in-law's boyfriend has run over pedestrians crossing the street? Yikes lol. You know, it really seems unfair to me that there are really people who think we need to cater to people who are not even within legal rights to be here. I mean if I go trespass on somebody's property, they can legally shoot me or bodily remove me from their property. The same should be said for people who immigrate illegally - instead of trying to keep them from getting run over.

I live in Canada and we have two official languages, English and French. I do not know French well enough to speak it and can only understand it because I grew up with mainly English speaking people and our provinces are larger than states. In fact, we have so many immigrants from other countries, as well as Creek, Assinboine, and Dakota that we would have to know at least five other languages in case we run into someone who speaks a language other than English. Unless you know the other language in that you hear it everyday, you will still not be very proficient in it, not like in Europe where it is just a short hop, skip, and a jump to where the people speak a different language, not to mention dialects.
The only way that Americans will learn Spanish enough for Mexicans and Spanish can feel comfortable is if one of the states becomes completely Spanish. Then the neighboring states will have to learn Spanish. Now what will it be New Mexico, Texas, or California?
Some of the states are the same size as the European countries. It is easier to learn another language is you will meet the other speakers every day, but not if it is once a week.

Hello Suspenseful,
I live in New Mexico. I studied Castilian Spanish in school, yet have never had to speak Mexi-Spanish in my twenty years in NM. I understand it well enough, but the conjugation is very different. Plus, there are so many Spanglish, and Mexico derivatives, that there is no real, single Mexi-Spanish language.
While Mexi-Spanish is quite prevalent here, there are many who simply refuse to be forced to adopt a language other than English (for a whole host of reasons). So, those who employ Mexican immigrants (legal and illegal) insulate the public from the language barrier by generally having an English speaking employee in the public's view.
I'll also share that some of the most rabid anti-spanish language New Mexicans are former Mexican citizens who immigrated here legally. While they may still speak Mexi-Spanish at home, they are adament about speaking English in mixed company!

I feel that an immigrant learning English is a sign that they have enough ambition to contribute to society. I wouldn't hire someone who didn't speak the language that I speak. Why should I have to learn a different language because someone else. If they want a job with me then they will have to learn English.
When they learn English then I will learn Spanish. No one can force a group of people to do something that they are not willing to force another group. I am sure there are a lot of groups as well as lawyers that will fight that type of discrimination for free.

While I don't think it should necessarily be mandatory for Americans to learn spanish it sure doesn't hurt. In order to graduate high school you have to have completed to courses in a foreign language. And a lot of businesses now prefer their workers to be bilingual. Now it does irritate me when immigrants (illegal or not) come to America to live and refuse to learn English. I think if you are going to live in a foreign country you need to be able to learn the language. I certainly wouldn't move to Germany and expect everyone over there to speak English to cater to me. I would learn the language. But at the same time I don't see the harm in Americans learning spanish. I mean really, is it such a bad thing to learn a new skill?

Obama is smart in some things, and spinning tales to his advantage is one of them. Haven't you realized, when is after a certain section of the voters, that he changes his tune to match those voters? Next week, he may be saying something else.
But, I don't personally think trying to sell a bilingual America is not going to get him votes. WE speak ENGLISH in America and I think the government has done wrong by not making it the language that everyone has to learn if they become citizens of our nation. So many people come here and never learn the language, but yet here Obama thinks WE need to learn theirs. HEY - this is OUR country, not theirs. IT is a privilege to come to America, and if that be so, one should WANT to learn English. It should be a requirement, period.

Sorry, Elaan, English IS the primary language of the United States, and should be. The people who populated originally and made this a great nation were English speaking people. I have no problem with a multitude of languages, but I also agree that if you move here to the United States to LIVE longterm and raise your family and work, you should be learning and speaking English and not continuing to speak your own language instead and get mad at AMERICANS for speaking English. If you come to MY home, you will abide by MY rules, in other words.
Most American tourists or Americans who emigrate out to other countries to live will learn about the customs and cultures and primary language(s) wherever they are going and they integrate themselves, instead of going there and refusing to fit in. This is the proper and decent way to do things, and others would be wise to do the same thing.

Yes, it is your country but English is not your language. English is the language of the people of England and even they are not as protective of it as you are. Even the English make sure that English is not the only language they speak. Holding on to the English language as you do makes it seem like 1776 never came.

Yes, English if our language. The only other language spoke here when the English came over was Indian. Other people have come over but most all people learn English so they can communicate. Languages are taught in school but everybody doesn't take them. And, I will restate the fact that English is the language spoken here mostly. We are a nation of English-speaking Americans. When you go to another country to live, it is not THEIR responsiblity to learn your language but your responsibilty to learn theirs. But we have lots coming here that will not learn English,SO America has had to opt to put a different language (Spanish) on about everything sold here. DO you see Italian or any other language put on products sold here? THEY migrated over to America, too, you know. But nobody thought it necessary to put their language on anything. After all, the majority of them wanted to become Americans, speak the language so they could communicate.

His statements should make you question what he will do about illegal immigration. Apparently just offer illegal immigrants free health care at our expense. How does he get away with saying things like this. From the time his wife said she was never proud of this country before until now everything he says seems to make him think America is too good for itself. We need to cut this, be more understanding, learn this, give up this or that. Didn't we build a strong country to be a leader in the world? Why should we have to pay more and get less? learning a second language is fine, helpful, and educational, but this appears to be another one of his rips on our country. I often wonder why he dislikes

Mscot that is probably the most brilliant analysis I've seen on Obama. Obama almost always talks about how much we need to change; one would think he really does hate this country.
Basically, the "change" he always talks about is finally coming clear, and it's not a good thing.
Disarm America
Negotiate with terrorists
Give illegals a free pass
Force Americans to learn Spanish
People are being deceived by his talk much the way people have been deceived by evil men throughout history. They tend not to hear what he's REALLY saying.

Excuse me I thought this was our United States, I believe that if other people want to come to America to live it is there place to learn the language that is spoken here. Same as if I went to Germany or Italy or any other foreign country, would they demand that all their people learn English for me. I know there are tons of Spanish speaking people in this country. They came here we did not go there. It is their place to learn our language. This amn is going to ruin it for the American here if he is elected, it seems he is for anything that is for the foreigner and not seen much he is going to do for us, we can only hope that he does not get elected, we will become the second class people in our own country.

Well, when those people learn your language and you can't speak theirs, they have an advantage over you. Whether you like it or not, there are some jobs in this country that are reserved for bilinguals. Learning another language does not make you less than the people whose language you learn. It makes you stronger in dealing with those people. I speak four languages so I know what I'm talking about.

You don't see Japaneese people making everyone in their country learn English cause a few Americans come there. Or the French learning English cause a few American go to France. If Obama thinks that the Europeans are so wonderful, maybe he should go over there and live with them! He also needs to realize that a good portion of the Spanish speaking population in the United States are illegal aliens and need to be deported!
Sure Europeans know how to speak French or German or Spanish - it's probably their native language! If they come to our country, they need to learn to speak English - we do not need to learn all of their languages so that we can communicate with them when they come to OUR country!
I think its interesting that years ago when many of our ancestors came to this country as immigrants, among the first things they did was to learn to speak English and to become a US citizen. Now immigrants want to come to our country and us cater to them - they want us to learn their language, and they want the benefits of being an American without becoming a citizen.

Well, there's nothing wrong with learning a second or third language, but should it be mandatory that it be Spanish? I don't think so. As an adult, it costs money to learn another language. I took French in school, so that doesn't help me out with Spanish. I know a little Spanish just because I pick things up in passing, but I can't speak it. I would have to take classes or something. I'm thinking about buying this Nintendo DS game that teaches spanish. I'm just not sure how far it would go in teaching you. Anyway, I don't think it's fair to tell Americans that they have to learn Spanish. If Spanish-speaking immigrants want to move here, then they should shell out the money to learn English classes rather than me having to shell out money for Spanish classes because Spanish-speaking immigrants want to live here. How much sense does that make? The problem with Obama's statement about Europeans is that Europeans DON'T expect Americans to be able to speak whatever language it is that they speak. French people don't even expect Americans that visit France to know French...that's why most of them speak English. What's next? Are we going to be required to learn every freaking language in the world in order to appease immigrants?

Obama did not say it should be mandatory. Do you think the French want you to know their language? They don't care. They love being able to say nasty things about you while you're sitting right there so you look stupid. When other people send their ambassadors here, they make sure those people speak English. If you send an ambassador to France who can't speak French, it should be embarrassing unless you have no sense of shame.

I don't think that it should be mandated that we are bilingual, but it would be cool to be able to speak another language. I wish I would have retained what I learned in Spanish class in school. What is he talking about "when we go over there"? Who the hell can afford to go anywhere anymore with the way the economy is? If it is embarrassing for him then he should take a Rosetta Stone Language course online. Then if he becomes President, he can learn how to ask the French if we can borrow more money in their own language. Maybe that will make it a little less embarrassing for him!

I live in a place where they speak mostly spanish. I have a lot of customers that don't speak english at all. I do speak spanish now, the reason because I would not be able to get a job in the town I live in if you don't. You can not speak English and get A job. But if you only speak English there is a good chance you won't get a job. Now is that righ or fair. Obama needs to come here and see what is really like. I am not a political person. I just think that it's unfair. If I am going to learn spanish in order to communicate. Then people need to make an effort to learn english.
