I'm at it again! Just another rant!

I'm so tired of receiving junk mail from "charity" organizations. I put that in quotes because when you check out the CEO's of these organizations, you usually find that they draw salaries in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Yeah, the charity does benefit the community some, but they're making mega bucks. To top it all, they don't have any way of "targeting" their mailing lists. Why would a charity send a plea for support to a retired single woman who's total income is BELOW the national poverty level? Yeah, I'm all for saving lives and helping those in need where I can, but the main life I have to be concerned with is my own. Am I just in a P#&&y mood today, or does this irritate others too?

Sometimes it does annoy me too believe me -- why can't people as rich as Oprah and those rich televangelists do the charity job?

Well, to be fair Oprah does give a lot to charity. Just because a celebrity is rich doesn't mean they don't care. The point is, she's not promoting a charity and taking half the money that comes in for herself. That's my problem with organizations. The CEO's take their "share" off the top.

I once got a piece of mail from the local police department asking for money----two weeks after I got a 50 parking ticket. I was two inches closer to the corner than was legally allowed. They were really streching with that one. I was also unemployed due to illness when this happened. I was mad about that them asking for money.

I think that would make me mad too. I live in a rural area and if I have some money when the Sheriffs department is making their annual fund drive I will give to them, because I do feel like if I needed them they'd be there and they do have dangerous jobs keeping me safe. But then I get a call for a pledge from the city police and I turn them down and they get a little huffy.

Yeah, around here it usually is for the sheriffs department. I usually know the deputy by name if not personally, but in larger cities I don't doubt that people will scam you.

when you get mail or a phone call saying it's from the police or sheriff's department it's a scam. they don't raise money like that. if you're ever not sure you can call them cause they don't like the scams either. they will either ask you in person, or have a policeman's ball. even if the solicitor gives you a decal to put on your car, or some other official looking gimmick, it's not real.

I agree with you. I think "charities" should set better examples, and take vows of poverty for the workers, or atleast a vow to live only as well as those whom they will help tsupport. I will take food across the street to the drop in centre, beore I will donate to ay carity with a CEO.

I don't necessarily feel that they should take a vow of poverty, but when they take so much that they're in the top 10 % earners in the nation, that's definitely WRONG!

It is irritating. I would much rather help out a family than a organization. You have no idea who is getting that money.

I agree. I will give to the local food bank, because I know that if I needed help all I'd have to do would be show up on their doorstep.

You can stop the phone calls from the national charities. You local ones may not check the do not call registry, but if they don't, you can just tell them, I'm on the do not call registry, this is harassment. That shuts them up in a hurry. https://www.donotcall.gov/ Just go here and sign up.

i'm sick of junk mail period. it is a chore to sort out. and it really fills the trash up. you sometimes need a separate bag just for junk mail. then some of the charities are scams. it's best to give to places that are local and that you can see the need and where the money is going. the bigger ones don't use the money the way you want it spent. my brother-in-law found out after researching united way that they send donation money overseas to sterilize women. they don't tell you that. also when i gave to a veteran's organization what little i could afford. they kept sending me gifts. two flags, a mug or two. two identical certificates naming me donor of the year. and if i then they asked me for more money. they also gave me a tote bag. and some other stuff i didn't open. they blew all the money i gave them and then some. then asked for more. i heard then on the news that they were a scam. the only thing is if a charity gives just one percent of their donations to the actual need, they are legal.

No, you are not alone, my Mother lives with us and she gets that junk all the time, the problem is she wants to give to all of them although she is in the same boat as you. I have actually got to where i just throw some of it out. That may be wrong but she would not have money left for her medicine if i didn't.

Yes, I want to help too. I'm not a stingy miser. But I do know my limits. Besides I have so little to give I'd rather buy an extra can or two of veggies or bag of beans etc. and give it to the local food bank.

That is real problem we should care if we have the ability. PLease take good care .my friend.

When you don't have money to help others, no one should make you feel bad about it. There's always things you can do to help others that don't cost you anything, like dropping in on a lonely or elderly neighbor. Charities don't see good deeds as helping they only see the money they can pocket.
