Wind Power

This is a result of the storm my daughter experienced today (7-10). One block away a tree with a trunk about 5 feet in diameter was uprooted yet thei sign got curled up from the wind. As I looked at it taking the photo I could see that it was a fresh bend as there were paint chips on the ground so I knew this had just happened. Isn't the power of the wind amazing at times? Have you seen anything along these lines from high winds?

As a sailor I have a lot of respect for the elements - you need to to stay alive!
The sign looks as though it is cocking its leg against the pole! haha

I've never seen one up close, I'm always watching the weather channel where they have storm chasers. Grandpa Bob how close have you been to one of them?

I have been actually in one not too long ago. One hit right in my neighborhood a couple years ago. Late May this year I went storm chasing and just missed one by a few minutes only. I did get a shot of the funnel cloud going up into the sky. Check my pages I have a couple discussions about that May storm.

Do you have insurance for all the damage that was cause by the tornadoes? When the news makes the announces, I've seen a whole neighborhood wiped out. If you are still paying for your home, do they stop the payment, or does the insurance over everything? How does that work.

Our home owners insurance would cover that type of damage. And most times it would also be taken care of to a degree with help from Salvation Army and or Red Cross assisting a lot finacially as well.

Wow, wind power can be mighty awesome at times. As I related on your awesome pine discussions due to a really bad wind storm the tree I always called my baby tree fell. I felt terrible about it since I had watched it grow for twenty five years. The worse is when there are bad wind storms in the Manhattan area....chunks of skyscraper buildings have been known to be ripped off in heavy winds

I am gald we do not have winds like that. We have had 30 and 40 mile an hour winds but not much more than that.
We have our occasional earthquake but not bad ones in a long time.

I think I'd rather have to worry about an
earthquake before worrying about a tornado.

Me too. In fact we do not worry about eathquakes. We may regret this one day but we do not have earthquake insurance it is so expensive.

I've never seen anything like this. But I've heard the wind blowing which was quite strong. Living in California, we don't get tornados, This one time, we could hear the wind blowing hard. It turn out the we had a twister and it lifted out a couple roofs. some damage, but nothing like you have over there. Take care.

Yes and in out place this kind of things does happen much frequently as we are now on typhoon season already. We just had a brushed with one strong one and one passenger ship which has 700-800 passengers was the first major victim of these strong winds and waves. There were a few survivors and many perished in that ship mishap.

Yes. the wind can act so deadly at times. there have been high whistling winds come through here in southern Indiana also. After the storms goes through and you look around, it almost seems like a torando has come through with all of the damage and devastation it leaves behind.

Good evening, Grandpa Bob. The wind power is great as to do many damages to the nature. There have been a few times when I saw the roof of a house blown away by the strong typhoon. It is really awful when this happens. Take care, Grandpa Bob.

absolutely right.on one hand,it did bring huge damages
to people, that is really terrible.on the other hand,if
we make full use of wind power,we can produce electricity
to use.buddy, what's your view on that?

Hi GRANDPA BOB! I have great fear for strong winds. I have seen many houses blown away, cars being carried out distances away, roofs being snatched out from the house frame, etc.. The wind is amazing yet is scary. Just don;t want to cross the path of the wind.
Take care and God bless!

The only thing that happened recently through the weather was while we were on holiday, we got back and apparently the winds had been that strong that they had torn my favourite tree in half and threw it down the side of the house. I would love to know what the tree ever did to the wind to make it do that to it, must have upset it somehow in a former life.
Luckily although the tree had crashed down by the side of the house there was no structural damage and a window that the tree had fallen against had remained intact which surprised me!

That must have been some powerful wind. The sign looks like someone grabbed it and hauled it upwards!
the most powerful storm I every experienced was in the UK when I was a teenager. I remember standing out back with my father watching the huge trees at the rear falling. Then the next day I remember the fire engines coming out to shove them off the road. It was fun to watch, but I'm still really grateful that our house wasn't damamged in any way.

That's really neat how the wind can bend that sign and in also uplift a tree. I can't say that I have seen winds like that in my area, but my husband has seen the wind so strong to make a tree bend so far down it almost touched the ground, but didn't break.

This time, when we had the strong wind cause by a tornado, we got branches of trees that were falling out and few uprooted thin trees..It didn't pass our area but the wind was strong enough for me..
I know how cruel this wind sometimes, and I hope there will be no dangerous calamities that will happen again..Real scary!

When I lived in Phoenix, the wind--when it bothered to blow, that is--did some damage and uprooted trees, destroyed signs, etc., but nothing like bending metal. Here is Ohio I haven't seen wind do damage like that, so far.

We had some high winds last year sometime, and it was scarey. I was trying to drive down the highway, all the time fighting the wind, it felt like my car was going to get blown away. We also were having fires around our area and that was scarey all you could see and smell was smoke, and you could actually see the glow in the sky from the fires, all the tin got blown off of our barn. The power of high winds is amazing.
