if you mean software to record sound or music tracks then there's no problem with me of any sound production software as long as it records and recieves sounds coming from my microphone or mixer but speaking of mixing console then i my best software would be cubase because of it's features although it is not that user friendly and sometimes complicated but it is worth to learn on how to use that software...i also prefer to use Magix samplitude pro 10 when i want to mix recorded tracks fast because of it's good presets that makes your final mix have a good quality sound..

Do you mean software for recording live music? I've been using Magix Music Studio 10 and have been very happy with the results. If you are looking for a free program...try Audacity which is a little easier to use...but does take a little more knowledge to set up.
