Doctors who advertise...

Until recently, I have rarely seen doctors advertise. Dentists, cosmetic surgeons, and eye doctors, yes, but never OB/GYNs, family physicians or pediatricians. I have always found my doctors on the recommendations of my family or friends, never through an advertisement. Lately I have been seeing it a lot, and I was wondering, are there more doctors? Are people not going as often? Why has it become a competitive field? Would you go to a doctor based on an advertisement on TV, radio or a bulletin board? I think I would hesitate. I kind of think, if they were good, they wouldn't need to advertise. Am I being unfair or too picky? Have you seen this too? What are your thoughts?
